Shamrock Capital is an investment firm that acquired the master recordings of Taylor Swift’s first six albums in 2020. It no longer owns them: Swift announced on May 30, 2025, that she had bought her music back from Shamrock. The deal brought the original recordings and other assets she named under her ownership, though its price and detailed contract terms have not been disclosed in the sources cited here.
What is Shamrock Capital?
Shamrock Capital is an investment firm. Its role in this story was as the owner of the master recordings of Swift’s first six albums from 2020 until her 2025 buyback. The available reporting establishes that role in this transaction, not a comprehensive account of the firm’s business or investment portfolio.

How ownership of the six albums changed
The reported chain of ownership ran from Big Machine Label Group to Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in 2019, then to Shamrock Capital in 2020, and finally back to Swift in May 2025. The Washington Post’s account of the transaction describes the recordings and their ownership history.
The six original albums, listed by release year, are:

What master recordings are—and what the deal concerned
A master recording is the original version of a recorded performance. Ownership of a master can affect how that recording is licensed and used in contexts such as films, commercials, and other media. The ownership story here concerns the original recordings; it should not be confused with songwriting or music-publishing rights.
In her May 30, 2025 letter, Swift said the purchase included her music, music videos, concert films, album art and photography, and unreleased songs. She described her aim as buying the music outright “with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy.” That is Swift’s description of the deal; the detailed contract and its schedules have not been made public in the sources cited here.

What happened to Taylor’s Version?
Swift’s rerecordings are new recordings, distinct from the original masters. She said she had meticulously rerecorded and released four of the six albums as Taylor’s Version: Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version), Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), and 1989 (Taylor’s Version). The rerecordings do not replace the original recordings; they are separate versions.
In her May 2025 letter, Swift said she had not rerecorded a quarter of Reputation, which she described as the one album among the first six she felt could not be improved by redoing it. She also said she had completely rerecorded her debut and liked how it sounded. She left open the possibility of releasing further rerecorded material when the time was right, but did not announce a release date.
