Shen Yun is a New York-based performing arts company known for classical Chinese dance and story-based stage shows. The controversy around it stems partly from its connection to Falun Gong and performances about the persecution of practitioners in China, and partly from former performers’ allegations about working conditions. Those allegations remain contested: a May 2026 court ruling allowed most claims in one case to proceed, but did not determine whether they were true.
What is Shen Yun?
Founded in New York in 2006, Shen Yun describes itself as a performing arts company presenting classical Chinese dance, music and short works based on Chinese history, legends and ethnic traditions. It is not the name of a single dance.

The company says many of its artists practice Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, and that the practice informs their work. Shen Yun also says some performances depict the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in contemporary China. The company presents those pieces as stories about faith and human rights; that is its account of their purpose and meaning.
Why is Shen Yun controversial?
Two issues are often discussed together but should be distinguished: the company’s religious and political context, and allegations about how performers are treated. Shen Yun’s own materials establish that Falun Gong is part of its stated artistic context and that some pieces address persecution in China. Separately, former performers have raised concerns about working conditions, compensation and the treatment of young artists. Those claims are disputed and should not be treated as established facts simply because they have been reported or filed in court.

When weighing statements about the controversy, it helps to ask who is making the claim and what kind of record supports it:

What do the lawsuits say, and what has a court decided?
The lawsuit reported in 2024
In November 2024, the Associated Press reported on a lawsuit by former dancer Chang Chun-Ko. The report described the complaint’s allegations of long hours and low pay. These are allegations made in that case, not findings by a court. The available account does not establish a final outcome, and this lawsuit should not be confused with the later Sun and Cheng case.

The Sun and Cheng case
In an opinion dated May 18, 2026, the court in Sun et al. v. Shen Yun Performing Arts, Inc. et al., case 7:25-cv-03185, denied the defendants’ motion to dismiss most of the plaintiffs’ claims. It dismissed requests for declaratory and injunctive relief; the other claims survived at that stage, with discovery to follow.
A motion to dismiss tests whether claims may proceed under the applicable legal standard. It does not decide whether the allegations are true. The ruling was procedural, not a final disposition of the case and not a finding that forced labor or trafficking occurred.

What does Shen Yun say about the labor investigation?
In its September 2026 facts page and a May 2026 release, Shen Yun says the New York State Department of Labor issued findings on April 8, 2026, and found no violations concerning child performers, working conditions or compensation. The underlying department determination was not independently available for verification here, so that outcome should be understood as the company’s account—not as an agency record independently reviewed for this article.
This reported investigation and the Sun and Cheng court ruling address different kinds of records. The company’s account concerns the outcome it attributes to a labor investigation; the court ruling concerns whether most claims in a particular lawsuit could proceed. Neither should be used to state more than it establishes.

What is a Shen Yun performance like?
According to the company’s official FAQ, a show lasts roughly two hours plus intermission and usually includes about 17–18 short dance pieces, a live orchestra, bilingual emcees and classical vocal or instrumental solos. The FAQ says song lyrics are translated on the backdrop and that audiences do not need to read anything in advance. These are company-provided format details and can vary by season or venue.
The same FAQ directs audiences to ShenYun.com for performances and authorized ticket options, and warns that tickets from unauthorized resellers may not be honored. Readers checking a particular date or venue should confirm the current details through the company’s official channels.
