In music, “RB” usually means R&B, short for rhythm and blues. The term began as a broad label for African American music and has changed meaning over time; it does not describe one fixed sound or a checklist every song must follow.
What does R&B stand for?
R&B stands for rhythm and blues. The ampersand is the standard styling, though “RB” in a music question is generally understood to refer to R&B.

R&B is not simply another name for blues. It is a broad genre label associated with a range of African American musical forms, and its meaning has shifted across periods and contexts.
Where did the term come from?
The Library of Congress traces “rhythm and blues” to the 1940s, when it replaced “race music” as a broad marketing term for African American music, generally secular rather than religious. According to the Library’s account, the phrase first appeared in commercial recording in 1948, when RCA Victor used “blues and rhythm” to describe African American secular songs. Early uses could include boogie-woogie, African American swing, jazz and blues. The Recording Academy also lists spirituals, gospel and jump blues among the styles that shaped R&B. These overlapping influences help explain why the label has never had one definitive sound test. Recording Academy: “R&B Music & Awards”
How has R&B’s sound and meaning changed?
The Library of Congress describes postwar R&B as drawing on pop, gospel, blues and jazz, with a strong backbeat, rhythmic drive and emotionally direct vocals. Those are useful features for understanding the period, not requirements that every modern R&B track must meet.

The term’s scope has continued to expand and shift. The Library of Congress says it remains an umbrella for many African American musical forms. In practice, what someone means by “R&B” can depend on the era and how broadly they are using the label; the boundaries with related styles are not hard rules. Is “RB” the same as “R&B”?
Usually, yes, when the context is music: “RB” is an informal or simplified way of writing R&B. The established expansion is rhythm and blues. If a source uses “RB” without an ampersand, context is still important, since abbreviations can mean different things outside music.

What does the R&B label tell you about a song?
It places the song in a musical tradition with African American roots, but it does not by itself identify a particular instrument, tempo, vocal style or production method. To describe a specific track accurately, consider its period, influences and sound rather than treating “R&B” as a strict formula.
One dated statistic illustrates why the category needs care: the Recording Academy reported that rap and R&B together surpassed rock in total music consumption in the United States in 2017. That was a combined category and a U.S. figure for that year—not a finding that R&B alone led consumption, or a current ranking. Recording Academy: “R&B Music & Awards”
