Instrumental music is music in which instruments, rather than a featured vocal performance, carry the main musical content. The word describes the role of voices in a piece, not a genre. An instrumental can be a standalone composition, an instrumental version of a song, or a passage inside a larger vocal work.

How the term is defined

A general reference definition describes an instrumental as a piece of music without vocals, or without a prominent vocal performance. The Wikipedia entry on “Instrumental” is useful for orientation on the conventional meaning and common examples.

Where the boundary falls

The line is not always mechanical. In popular usage, a work with brief or incidental vocal sounds may still be called an instrumental. The boundary can depend on what is foregrounded in the piece: if the voice is not the main thing a listener is meant to follow, the work can still fall under the instrumental label. Wordless vocal sounds therefore do not automatically change the classification.

Instrumental passages inside songs

An instrumental section within an otherwise sung work has its own names. When it falls between vocal sections, it is an instrumental interlude. When it appears before the singer begins, it is an instrumental introduction. In both cases the passage belongs to a larger vocal work rather than standing as a separate composition.

What “instrumental” does and does not mean

Because the term describes the role of voices, it cannot tell you a style. Instrumental works appear across many musical traditions and performance formats, from solo pieces to large ensembles. The table below separates the three situations readers most often encounter.

Type Relationship to vocals How it is usually identified
Standalone instrumental composition Written or performed without vocals as a complete work The title and credits present it as an independent piece
Instrumental version of a vocal song The song’s music is performed without the sung line Labelled as an instrumental, version or karaoke-style release of an existing song
Instrumental passage within a song A section of music inside a sung work Named as an interlude or introduction, depending on its position

Early history and the limits of the written record

Encyclopedia.com’s overview of instrumental music reports that more music was composed for voices than for instruments during the Renaissance, and that almost no written instrumental music survives from before 1500. The same overview describes evidence of skilled instrumental performance and later collections of lute music and other instrumental repertory.

These are claims about surviving notation. They do not show that instrumental performance was absent before the earliest surviving scores. Written music and performed music are different records, and a gap in the notation is not evidence of silence in practice.

Instrumental music in learning and performance

Instrumental music can be performed by a single musician or by an ensemble. Queensland’s official Instrumental music program, as described on the Queensland Department of Education site and updated on 21 January 2026, gives students the chance to learn band or orchestral instruments and to take part in concert bands and orchestras. The program is part of the co-curricular structure of Queensland schooling in Australia.

The Queensland Instrumental Music Curriculum, version 2.1 adds that students develop technique and engage with a broadening range of genres and styles. Its stated purpose reads:

“The overarching purpose of the co-curricular Instrumental Music Program is to provide students with the opportunity to become musicians by experiencing the expressive qualities of music through learning to play a band or orchestral instrument and participating in concert bands and orchestras.”

This is one education context, not a universal model of how instrumental music is taught. Other schools, countries and private teachers organise instruction differently.

How to classify a piece you are hearing

No standard taxonomy governs these labels, so the following practical questions help separate most cases:

  1. Are vocals entirely absent, or present but not prominent?
  2. Which sound source or instrument family leads the music?
  3. Is the piece performed by a solo musician or by an ensemble?
  4. Is the sound acoustic, electronic or a mix of both?
  5. Is it an original instrumental composition, an instrumental arrangement, or a passage within a vocal work?

The everyday phrasing behind the question

A common plain-language version of the question is “What do you call songs with no words?” An online discussion on r/musictheory uses that phrasing. It is one anecdotal example of everyday wording, not a measured search pattern. The standard term for such music is instrumental music, and a single piece of it is usually called an instrumental.
