Jazz has no fixed instrument lineup. Saxophones, trumpets, piano, bass and drums are familiar choices, but jazz groups may also feature trombone, clarinet, guitar, voice, violin, vibraphone, flute, banjo, tuba, French horn and other percussion. The combination depends on the ensemble and the sound its musicians want.
Common instruments in jazz
Jazz ensembles draw from several instrument families. The Smithsonian Folkways catalog for Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology documents a wide range, including saxophones, brass, piano and other keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, violin, vibraphone, flute and voice.
Brass
Trumpet and trombone are common brass voices; cornet also appears, while some ensembles use tuba or French horn. Trumpet has a prominent place in jazz history: Smithsonian collections include examples associated with Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. The instrument carrying a melody or solo varies by group and arrangement.
Woodwinds
Saxophone and clarinet are central jazz woodwinds, and flute is another documented option. Saxophones come in several registers, including soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass. Coleman Hawkins and Johnny Hodges are among the saxophonists featured in Smithsonian’s Jazz in the Collections.

Chordal instruments, bass and percussion
Piano and guitar can supply chords, rhythmic patterns or melodies. Bass supports the ensemble’s low end, and drums and other percussion help shape its pulse and texture. Cataloged jazz instruments include both double bass and electric bass, as well as drums and percussion. These roles are flexible: an ensemble may change or omit individual parts.
Other melodic voices
Jazz can also feature violin, vibraphone and vocals. These are not merely exceptions to a standard roster; they are part of the documented range of sounds found in jazz collections and ensembles.

How the lineup changes with the ensemble
A small combo and a big band do not need the same instrumentation. Combos can be built around a few players, while big bands use larger sections and arranged parts. Smithsonian’s jazz history describes the development of big-band instrumentation and credits bandleader Fletcher Henderson with standardizing an orchestral instrumentation and arranging style. That history is one path in jazz, not a rule for every group.
Distinctive lineups show how wide the possibilities are. A 1948 band led by Miles Davis included French horn and tuba. The Quintette du Hot Club de France paired guitarist Django Reinhardt with violinist Stéphane Grappelli in a string-centered group. Neither combination is a template that other jazz bands must follow.

What makes an instrument part of a jazz group?
The instrument list alone does not define the music. The Smithsonian’s jazz education guide describes improvisation as typically important in jazz, including solos made up in the moment and call-and-response among instruments, voices or band parts. In practice, the instruments interact: one may carry the melody, another answer it, and others provide chords, bass lines or rhythmic support.
When comparing two ensembles, listen for how many players they have, which instrument takes the melody or solo, whether the sound centers on winds or strings, and how the group covers chords and rhythm. Those differences describe the arrangement and sound; they do not make one lineup more authentic than another.

Do all jazz bands have saxophones?
No. Saxophone is a familiar and widely documented jazz instrument, but jazz has no mandatory roster. A group may center on trumpet, piano, guitar, violin or another instrument, and some lineups do not include saxophone at all.
What is the most common jazz instrument?
There is no single most common instrument established by the sources cited here. Trumpet and saxophone are prominent solo voices, while piano, guitar, bass and drums recur across many ensemble examples; which instrument stands out depends on the group and its arrangement.
