Analog horror is online horror fiction that borrows the look and storytelling conventions of older broadcasts and recordings—think television alerts, instructional tapes, VHS-like noise and fragments that seem recovered from an archive. The effect can make an invented event feel like evidence. The style can be made digitally; using an actual VHS camera is not a requirement.

What makes a work analog horror?

Analog horror uses the visual and narrative language of late-twentieth-century media to tell a frightening story. A clip might present itself as a local TV broadcast, public-service announcement, training film or home recording. Its format is part of the fiction: viewers are invited to imagine that the footage was recorded, archived or accidentally intercepted.

Common techniques include low-fidelity images, tape-like noise, distorted audio, long pauses, emergency notices, cryptic warnings and information delivered in fragments. The unease often comes not only from what appears on screen, but from gaps in the record: a warning without an explanation, an abrupt interruption or a detail that makes an ordinary broadcast seem wrong.

The term is flexible. It is often called a horror subgenre, while scholarly discussion also treats it as a style of digital filmmaking. That distinction helps explain why a work can use analog-media aesthetics without being shot or stored on analog equipment.

How did analog horror develop?

Kris Straub’s Local 58 is commonly credited with crystallizing or popularizing the label and its online broadcast format. Earlier internet horror, creepypasta and found-footage projects are part of the wider context. The available historical accounts do not establish that Local 58 was the first work ever to use every technique now associated with analog horror, so it is more accurate to call it formative than to assign it sole invention.

Later series broadened the style, drawing on fictional informational recordings, archival presentation, uncanny imagery and found-footage storytelling. The category has no universally agreed boundary or fixed canon.

Where should a newcomer start?

These examples show different ways creators use broadcast and recording conventions; they are starting points, not a definitive list.

Work Creator What its approach illustrates
Local 58 Kris Straub A fictional local television station and a series of unsettling broadcasts.
Gemini Home Entertainment Remy Abode Horror framed through fictional informational and instructional recordings.
The Mandela Catalogue Alex Kister Broadcast and archival presentation combined with uncanny imagery.
Backrooms videos Kane Parsons A related found-footage and liminal-space approach using contemporary digital production.

The works differ in how closely they simulate television or VHS, whether they tell a continuous story or assemble fragments, and how much they explain directly. Some leave viewers to piece together more of the narrative. Those differences are why analog horror is often more useful as a broad style label than as a strict checklist.

Does analog horror have to be supernatural?

No single taxonomy makes supernatural content a requirement. The defining idea is the use of older-media conventions to shape an unsettling fictional presentation. A story may involve uncanny or supernatural events, but the label can also describe works whose suspense comes from uncertainty, an unexplained warning or the suggestion that a recording documents something disturbing.

Do you need a VHS camera to make analog horror?

No. A VHS camcorder is an optional tool for creators who specifically want to record on tape, but the aesthetic can also be produced with modern devices and digital techniques. The defining effect comes from the presentation and storytelling choices, not from owning a particular camera or television.

Kane Parsons described an early creative goal as making “iPhone videos of things that didn’t actually happen, and have a fictional story that doesn’t describe itself as fictional.” That captures one route into the form: use a familiar recording style to make a made-up event feel as if it belongs to the real world.
