No release date, production start, director appointment, or returning cast has been announced in the cited report.
Is the Alien: Covenant sequel still happening?
Scott’s latest public update indicates that the proposed follow-up remains in development. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published August 26, 2026, he described a third Alien prequel as “in the works.” The report does not establish that a studio has formally approved the film or that it has entered production.

That distinction matters: a filmmaker describing a project as in development is not the same as a confirmed production with a schedule and cast. The interview gives no release date, production start, director appointment, or signed cast commitment.
What happened to the sequel, and when?
2017: Scott described plans to continue the story
In a Total Film interview in 2017, Scott said another film was being written and that Covenant would lead toward a third Prometheus film. He said, “And how this one ends will definitely take you on to the next one.” That captured his plans at the time; it does not show that a sequel was made or entered production.

- Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
In a separate SciFiNow interview from 2017, Scott traced the prequel idea to the question of why the creature had been designed. He said he and Fox developed Prometheus around that question and that he already had a broad idea for a second part of Covenant.
June 2025: Scott said he had “done enough”
Variety reported in June 2025 that Scott said: “Where it’s going now, I think I’ve done enough, and I just hope it goes further.” He was expressing his view of his own involvement and his hope for the franchise—not announcing that the sequel had been canceled.

August 2026: Scott described a third prequel as in the works
The Los Angeles Times interview published August 26, 2026 is the latest cited update: Scott said the proposed third prequel was in the works. It supplies evidence of development activity, but no reported greenlight, production schedule, or confirmed cast.
What would the next film be about?
Scott’s description centers on David, the android played by Michael Fassbender in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Scott characterized him as a malfunctioning AI and said the story would follow him creating a “brave new world for himself.” He also warned, “AIs can go off,” adding, “And if they do, it’s like a bomb.”

The interview does not provide a full plot synopsis, setting, or confirmed supporting characters. Claims about Engineers, Origae-6, or a direct bridge to the original Alien should therefore be treated as speculation, not confirmed story details.
Is the film called Alien: Awakening?
That title has appeared in earlier coverage, but Scott’s 2026 interview describes the project as a third Alien prequel without giving it that name. On the evidence currently cited, Alien: Awakening is not a confirmed title.

- Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk has English audio.
Is this the same project as Alien: Romulus?
No. Alien: Romulus is a separate installment in the franchise, not the continuation of Covenant described by Scott. The Walt Disney Company’s franchise article provides context for Romulus; it does not confirm the status of Scott’s proposed sequel.
