Spoilers for the opening of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. Oliver’s mother, Allie, saves him from drowning after an accident and dies afterward. Her loss leads Oliver to travel to the other world, Ni no Kuni, hoping he can bring her back.
How does Oliver’s mother die?
Oliver and his friend Mark take a homemade car out for a test. When a tire comes off, the car plunges into a river. Mark cannot rescue Oliver because he has injured his foot. Allie wakes, realizes Oliver is missing, follows him and pulls him from the water. She dies after saving him. Level-5’s official story summary describes the accident and rescue but does not give a medical cause of death, so the story does not establish a more specific diagnosis. Level-5’s official story page and the publisher’s official game page recount the opening events.

Why does Oliver go to Ni no Kuni?
After Allie’s death, Oliver meets Shizuku, a tear fairy. Shizuku tells him that defeating Jabou, a threat to Ni no Kuni, may give him a chance to save his mother. Oliver sets out for that other world with the hope of bringing her back; this possibility, rather than a guarantee, launches the game’s central quest. The official synopsis establishes the opening and premise, but does not provide enough detail to recount the late-game revelation or the complete resolution of Allie’s story.
Which version is the story from?

Editions and availability vary by platform and region, so check the listing for the version you intend to play: Bandai Namco’s game page and Level-5’s Japanese site.
