The man Miley Cyrus invited to accept her 2014 MTV Video Music Award was Jesse Helt. He used the moment to call attention to youth homelessness and My Friend’s Place. Weeks later, Helt turned himself in in Oregon over an alleged probation violation tied to an earlier case; in October 2014, news reports said he was sentenced to six months in jail. The sources available establish that 2014 timeline, but do not confirm what happened to Helt afterward or where he is today.
Who was the man at the 2014 VMAs?
Helt accepted the Video of the Year award for Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 24, 2014. Cyrus had met him through My Friend’s Place, a Hollywood organization serving homeless youth. Rather than make a conventional acceptance speech, Helt used the stage to draw attention to youth homelessness and the organization.

In the speech, Helt described his own experience, saying, “I know, because I am one of those people.” TIME reproduced that line and several figures he cited. Those numbers belong to his 2014 speech; they should not be read as independently verified current statistics.
What happened after the award?
Oregon warrant and surrender
After the VMA appearance, news reports said Oregon authorities had a warrant for Helt related to an alleged probation violation. The underlying case involved guilty pleas to misdemeanor criminal mischief and criminal trespass, for which he had received a 30-day jail sentence and probation. The warrant concerned the alleged violation of that probation, not a new conviction arising from his VMA appearance.

On August 28, 2014, Helt turned himself in at the Polk County Jail and was booked on the warrant. Contemporary accounts reported that he posted bail.
Court appearances and reported sentence
At an arraignment on September 16, 2014, Helt arrived late and did not enter a plea; he was expected to return to court. On October 7, reports said he had been sentenced to six months in jail for violating probation. That reporting establishes the sentence as reported at the time, but not his actual release date, custody details, or what followed.

What is known about Jesse Helt today?
The available reporting documents events in 2014, not Helt’s later life. It does not establish his current whereabouts, housing situation, or legal status. Claims that he is currently homeless, incarcerated, deceased, or living in a particular place would require newer, reliable evidence.
For people seeking public Oregon court information, the Oregon Judicial Department explains its court records and calendars services. The department notes that some records are not available through those services; a search result or lack of one would not, by itself, answer questions about someone’s current circumstances.
