Sarah Hyland said her face had swollen because of medication she was taking while being treated for serious kidney disease. In a 2017 statement, she named prednisone. Later accounts describe facial swelling amid the broader treatment surrounding kidney transplant rejection, dialysis and a second transplant. The available reporting does not establish cosmetic procedures as the cause of perceived changes.
What Sarah Hyland said about the swelling
In a social media post reproduced by ABC News on May 24, 2017, Hyland wrote: “Because I know that my face is swollen from medication that is saving my life.” ABC News reported that she identified prednisone as the medicine causing her face to swell at that time.

Hyland also said she had spent months largely on bed rest, could not exercise and had lost muscle mass during that difficult period. Her explanation was about medication and illness—not a diagnosis that can be made from comparing photographs.
How kidney treatment fits the story
Hyland was born with kidney dysplasia. The National Kidney Foundation’s 2022 account says she received a kidney from her father at age 21, later experienced rejection, underwent dialysis and eventually received a second kidney from her brother. The foundation also describes exhaustion and pain affecting her work on Modern Family, along with medication-associated facial swelling.

A 2018 SELF interview profile discusses swelling from immunosuppressant drugs in the context of dialysis, fluid retention and transplant care. That broader treatment account should not be collapsed into the narrower 2017 statement: Hyland named prednisone as the cause of swelling at that time, while later coverage describes medication-related swelling amid a complex course of care.
