Following her breakout as Lettie Lutz and her performance of “This Is Me,” she continued working in stage musicals and on screen, later taking on the dramatic role of Mary Lincoln in Mrs President. She has also spoken about the strain of sudden fame and a serious health crisis that changed how she thought about work and caring for herself.
How The Greatest Showman made Keala Settle widely known
Settle played Lettie Lutz in the 2017 film The Greatest Showman and performed “This Is Me.” The song won the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Original Song and was nominated for an Academy Award, according to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s biography of Settle. The Philharmonic also says the film soundtrack spent 28 weeks at number one on the UK charts and won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
The film brought Settle a level of recognition that followed her beyond the screen. In a 2024 interview, she said she was glad “This Is Me” had become a beacon of hope and personal strength for people around the world. She has also described the attention as complicated: the song’s association with personal trauma could make the experience of performing it feel exposing.
What Settle did after the film
Her post-film work crossed musical theatre, screen projects and, eventually, straight drama. These are documented engagements from past years, not a list of productions currently running.

In a 2022 interview, she spoke about prioritizing her mental health while reflecting on the years after the film. By 2026, she described recognizing the need to look after herself and choosing work that challenged her. Her comments present the health crisis and the pressure of public attention as part of her personal account, rather than as a simple explanation for every career decision.
Why Mrs President was a change of direction, not an exit from musicals
In Mrs President, Settle played Mary Lincoln in a dramatic stage role. The 2026 Guardian profile described the part as a creative turn she had wanted; Settle said she had craved moving from musicals into drama. She also connected her understanding of the play to experiences she had lived through.
