Gary Coleman earned fame and substantial income as the star of Diff’rent Strokes, but later faced a lawsuit over money taken from his earnings and filed for bankruptcy in 1999. His exact net worth when he died in 2010 is not established by a public estate accounting. Celebrity Net Worth’s often-cited $75,000 figure is an estimate, not a verified probate value.
How Coleman went from child-star success to financial trouble
Coleman played Arnold Jackson on Diff’rent Strokes, which ran for eight seasons, from 1978 to 1986, on NBC and ABC. The Television Academy says the series brought him international fame. Its account of his life also reports that he was awarded $1.3 million in 1993 and filed for bankruptcy in 1999. Television Academy
The later financial history is not a simple story of one event wiping out a known fortune. Public reports describe a dispute over earnings, a bankruptcy filing, and estimates of his wealth at different points. They do not provide a complete accounting of what Coleman earned, spent, retained, or owned when he died.
What the lawsuit established—and what it did not
In 1993, a judge found that $1.28 million in commissions, salaries, fees, and pension distributions had been wrongly taken from Coleman between 1982 and 1987, according to United Press International. UPI reported that Coleman’s suit against his parents and manager later settled, but the settlement terms were not disclosed. UPI

The Television Academy’s report says Coleman was awarded $1.3 million. That reported award and the judge’s finding are related figures, but neither establishes how much Coleman ultimately received or kept after the settlement. Without disclosed settlement terms and a full financial record, the lawsuit cannot be treated as an exact measure of his remaining wealth.
Why the net-worth figures vary
Stories about Coleman’s peak fortune and later finances use figures that answer different questions. A reported estimate of wealth at the height of his success is not the same as a verified accounting of his assets at death. The Los Angeles Times discussed widely circulated peak-fortune estimates, including an $18 million figure, but those estimates do not establish the value of his estate in 2010. Los Angeles Times

Celebrity Net Worth lists Coleman’s net worth at death as $75,000 on a page updated February 10, 2025. That is a secondary estimate; it is not an official probate or court figure. Celebrity Net Worth
Actor Todd Bridges also said in an Entertainment Tonight interview that Coleman had been bilked of $18 million and referred to an alleged secret will. Those are Bridges’s claims as reported by the outlet, not established findings about Coleman’s final assets. Entertainment Tonight via Paramount Press Express

What can be said about his finances at death?
Coleman died in 2010 at age 42. The available reporting supports a broad conclusion: his financial circumstances deteriorated after his child-star success, and he filed for bankruptcy in 1999. It does not establish a definitive net-worth figure at death. The commonly repeated $75,000 estimate should therefore be understood as an estimate rather than a confirmed value of what he left behind.
