Will Reeve was 12 when his father, Christopher Reeve, died in 2004, and 13 when his mother, Dana Reeve, died of lung cancer in 2006. He grew up with help from family and close friends, went on to become an ABC News correspondent, and stayed involved with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. In 2026, he also shared that he had been treated for testicular cancer.
Will Reeve lost both parents before high school
Christopher Reeve was paralyzed after a horse-riding accident in 1995. He died in 2004, aged 52, after complications following his spinal-cord injury. Will was 12. His father’s paralysis began when Will was not yet 3, shaping the kinds of ordinary childhood experiences they could share.
“We never got to do a lot of stereotypical father-son stuff — no catch in the backyard, no birds and the bees, no driving lessons, no prom pictures, no college visits, no guy’s dinners in New York City — because my dad was paralyzed when I was not yet 3 and died when I was 12,” Will told ABC News in an interview about his childhood and father.
Dana Reeve was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and died on March 6, 2006, aged 44. Will was 13. Christopher’s death followed complications from his spinal-cord injury; Dana’s was from lung cancer. They were different illnesses, and neither is reported as connected to Will’s later diagnosis.

How Will rebuilt his life and honored his parents
Will has spoken about the shock and loneliness of losing both parents so young. Family and close friends helped raise him. He later described wanting to carry his parents’ memory into his own life: “Whenever I was asked what I hoped to do with my life, I’d say something about wanting to honor my parents, both of whom died before I reached high school.”
He became an ABC News correspondent and remained connected to his family’s work. Boys & Girls Clubs of America identifies him as a board member of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which supports people affected by paralysis and their families.

Will Reeve’s 2026 cancer diagnosis and treatment
In September 2026, Will publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier that year. As reported by ABC News, he noticed a lump in April, underwent surgery, then had an operation on lymph nodes in June and two cycles of chemotherapy beginning in July. ABC News reported that he completed treatment at the end of July and rang the bell marking its end.
Will said he chose to talk about the diagnosis so others would know it can happen. “I want folks to know that this is a thing that can happen. It’s shocking. It’s weird. It’s slightly awkward to talk about just because of what we’re really discussing here, but that you end up okay, almost always.” This is his personal remark, not a medical guarantee. The September report documents treatment completion; it does not establish his current medical status as of October 8, 2026.
