George Clooney and director David O. Russell clashed while making Three Kings in 1999. Clooney said he objected to Russell humiliating and shouting at crew members; their conflict turned physical. How the conflict began on Three Kings
Russell directed the 1999 war film Three Kings, with Clooney in the lead. A contemporaneous Washington Post production feature described a $50 million budget and 68 shooting days. Those are figures reported in that article, not independently audited totals.
The same feature described a shoving match on a particularly difficult day of filming. Russell said the incident had been blown out of proportion and characterized it as tension being released. Producer Charles Roven said Clooney was also under pressure because he was filming Three Kings three days a week and ER the other four. The contemporary report establishes that a confrontation occurred, but does not settle the later dispute over exactly how it unfolded.
Why Clooney said he challenged Russell
In a 2003 Vanity Fair interview, Clooney said his objection was Russell’s treatment of crew members. “I would not stand for him humiliating and yelling and screaming at crew members, who weren’t allowed to defend themselves,” he said. “I don’t believe in it, and it makes me crazy.” Clooney added, “So my job was then to humiliate the people who were doing the humiliating.” These are Clooney’s account and explanation, not an independent finding about the production.

The two also disagreed about the film’s political tone. Clooney accused Russell of making the script more studio-friendly. Russell said Clooney had never raised that with him during filming and that he did not know what Clooney meant.
What each man said about the physical confrontation
In October 2004, the Guardian reported sharply different versions. Clooney said Russell headbutted and insulted him, and that Clooney responded by putting Russell in a headlock. Russell denied physically attacking Clooney and said Clooney had been the first to get physical.

The accounts should not be collapsed into a single uncontested sequence. The Guardian also reported hostile comments by both men in magazine interviews. Clooney was quoted as saying, “Quite honestly, if he comes near me, I’ll sock him right in the fucking mouth.” Russell said, “I never physically attacked him.”

In 2007, speculation connected Clooney to leaked footage of Russell yelling at Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees, partly because the Clooney–Russell feud was already well publicized. The Guardian reported that Clooney denied releasing the footage. The footage concerned Russell and Tomlin; the report describes speculation about Clooney’s involvement, not proof that he released it.

In 2024, Clooney again described the Three Kings experience negatively. The Independent reported his remarks in an interview with British GQ: Clooney said Russell had made his and the crew’s lives hell and that repeating the experience was not worth it at this point in his life. That is Clooney’s later assessment, not an independent investigation of the production.
