Director Ang Lee did recall one sharp disagreement during a river scene: Gyllenhaal improvised, and Ledger became upset when the change disrupted his careful preparation. Lee described a specific clash in working styles—not evidence of an ongoing feud.
Did Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger get along?
Accounts from the people who made the film point to mutual respect and friendship, alongside the pressures of working differently on set. Gyllenhaal later described his relationship with Ledger during filming as grounded in “a profound love” for people they knew and had been raised by. He also said Ledger’s commitment to the relationship between their characters showed how devoted both actors were to the story and film. Vanity Fair’s twentieth-anniversary retrospective records Gyllenhaal’s reflection.

The two had known each other before Brokeback Mountain: Gyllenhaal later said they had both auditioned for Moulin Rouge! and called Ledger “super lovable.” That history offers context for their later friendship, but the clearest description of their time together on Brokeback Mountain comes from Gyllenhaal’s own reflection on the film and their shared commitment to it. TheWrap reported his comments.
What was the disagreement on set?
Lee recalled a disagreement during a river scene. In the oral history published by Out, he said Gyllenhaal was inclined to improvise and stray from his lines, while Ledger was deeply prepared. Lee remembered Ledger becoming “really upset” because the deviation disrupted his progress. Read Lee’s account in Out’s oral history.

#1 Best Overall
It is worth keeping that story in proportion. Lee described one incident that illustrates contrasting approaches to a scene: one actor improvising, the other relying on careful preparation. The account does not establish that the actors disliked each other or that their disagreement developed into a sustained feud.
How did preparing for the film shape their work together?
Brokeback Mountain, released in 2005, adapts Annie Proulx’s short story. Ledger played Ennis Del Mar and Gyllenhaal played Jack Twist. Their roles depended on conveying a relationship across years, so the production prepared the actors for the physical world of the story as well as its emotional demands.
Focus Features’ production interviews describe cowboy training intended to help the actors feel comfortable and build chemistry. Ledger already knew how to ride; Gyllenhaal learned riding, sheep wrangling and other cowboy tasks. Lee praised Ledger’s dedication and preparation. Ledger also described the film as “a love story for this generation.”
The production began filming in Alberta in May 2004, completed principal photography in August 2004 and finished post-production in spring 2005, according to the Focus Features account. That context helps explain the intense preparation Lee recalled, but it does not turn a single reported disagreement into a broader conflict.

Was there an off-camera romance?
The available accounts do not establish a romantic relationship between Gyllenhaal and Ledger. The love story belongs to their characters, Ennis and Jack. Gyllenhaal’s comments about love between the actors refer to shared affection for people in their lives and to their commitment to the film; they are not evidence of an off-camera romance.
