The 2022 photos reflected Fanning’s childhood fandom, and Hilton publicly loved the homage. Later interviews point to a warm friendship and a professional collaboration, but do not establish anything beyond that.
Why Elle Fanning dressed as Paris Hilton
W Magazine’s August 2022 TV portfolio asked performers to pay tribute to favorite television characters. It identified Fanning’s choice as Paris Hilton from The Simple Life, the reality series Hilton starred in with Nicole Richie. W’s portfolio and interview with Fanning connect the costume to a childhood game she shared with her sister, Dakota.
Fanning said the sisters watched the show and acted out scenes: Elle usually played Richie while Dakota played Hilton. For the W shoot, Fanning got to reverse the roles and “dress up as Paris and have the dog,” because, as she put it, Dakota had always had the Chihuahua. The bikini was one piece of a character tribute rooted in that shared memory.
What the outfit looked like—and what is known about the bikini
Teen Vogue’s description of the shoot lists a bright pink bikini top under camouflage-print overalls, along with a pink Von Dutch trucker hat, 2000s-style sunglasses, heels, a stuffed dog evoking Hilton’s Chihuahua Tinkerbell, and silver stickers suggesting a belly-button piercing.

The bikini top’s brand and model were not identified in that coverage. The photos therefore support describing the look as a pink Y2K-style top, not naming a specific product or suggesting that Hilton or Fanning endorsed one.
What Fanning said about Hilton
Fanning’s own remarks make the affectionate intent clear. In her W interview, she said: “I love Nicole Richie. I love Paris Hilton. I’ve gotten to meet Paris a couple times, and she is the nicest and coolest.” That is Fanning’s description of her impression of Hilton, not independent evidence about Hilton’s private life.

Fanning also said she found it fascinating to learn from Hilton’s documentary that Hilton had adopted a persona for reality television, calling that “quite clever.” The costume was thus an homage to a recognizable television character, while Fanning’s comments conveyed admiration for the person she had met.
How Paris Hilton responded
Hilton embraced the tribute publicly. Teen Vogue reported that she commented on Fanning’s Instagram post, “Aw, Loves it! 🥰 That’s Hot! Love you sis!” Hilton also shared the photographs to her Instagram stories with the caption “This made my day.”

Those reactions show that Hilton enjoyed the homage; the “sis” wording is an affectionate public expression, not evidence of a literal family relationship or a romantic one.

Later reporting adds a professional dimension to the friendly exchange. Vanity Fair’s October 2025 profile said A24 acquired the rights to Hilton’s memoir on behalf of the Fanning sisters in 2023 and reported that the sisters and Hilton discussed a television project. Dakota said they would want to capture both Hilton’s glittering public persona and the more difficult parts of her journey. Hilton said the sisters “see beyond the catchphrases and sparkle.”

In a January 2026 interview with Who What Wear, Elle described Hilton as “very much involved” and “an amazing partner,” adding, “I love her.” These comments support a continuing warm, professional relationship. They do not mean the adaptation has been released; development plans can change.
