“Cishet” is a shortened form of “cisgender and heterosexual.” It describes a person who is both cisgender and heterosexual, and it can also be used as an adjective for things involving people who are. It is an informal word, so you will mostly see it in casual writing, online discussion, and commentary on films and television rather than in formal reference works.

What the two halves mean

The word joins two descriptors taken from different categories of identity.

“Cis” (short for cisgender)

GLAAD’s glossary defines a cisgender person as someone whose gender identity is aligned with the sex they were assigned at birth. In other words, a cisgender man or woman is someone whose sense of their own gender matches the sex recorded for them at birth. The UCSF LGBTQ Resource Center lists “cishet” among abbreviated terms in its LGBTQIA+ glossary, which places the word alongside other shorthand used in the community. GLAAD’s transgender terms glossary and the UCSF LGBTQIA+ glossary are the two references to check for the wording of each definition.

“Het” (short for heterosexual)

“Het” refers to heterosexuality, meaning attraction to people of a different gender from one’s own. It is the sexual-orientation half of the term.

Why the term joins two different kinds of identity

Gender identity and sexual orientation are separate things. Gender identity concerns a person’s understanding of their own gender. Sexual orientation concerns who a person is attracted to. GLAAD specifically cautions against treating the two as the same, and “cishet” is useful precisely because it names one of each. It does not merge them into a single category.

Element Concept it describes Question it answers
Cis Gender identity Does the person’s gender identity match the sex assigned at birth?
Het Sexual orientation Is the person attracted to people of a different gender?
Cishet (both) Both of the above Does the person fit both descriptors?

Because the term requires both descriptors, a person who is cisgender but gay, bisexual, or otherwise not heterosexual is not “cishet” as the term is defined in these sources. Nor is a heterosexual person who is transgender. Using the word for someone who fits only one half is a misuse of the definition.

How it is used in sentences

“Cishet” works in two grammatical roles:

  • As a noun for a person: “She identifies as cishet.” Here the word names someone who is both cisgender and heterosexual.
  • As an adjective for something involving such people: “cishet relationships” or “cishet creators” refers to relationships or creators who are cisgender and heterosexual.

Dictionary.com records “cis-het” with a hyphen as a variant spelling. Cambridge marks the word as informal, which is the more useful signal for editors and writers choosing whether to use it in formal copy.

When the word is appropriate and when it is not

The term is descriptive, but how it lands depends on who is using it and why. A sentence that uses the word to describe a demographic or to point out an assumption about who a story is written for is different from one that uses it to mock a person. Dictionary definitions describe the meaning but do not settle tone, so the surrounding sentence matters.

Several practical rules follow from the sources:

  • Use it only where both parts are relevant. If the sexual orientation of the person is not the point of the sentence, a more specific description may serve better.
  • Define “cisgender” when introducing the term to a general audience. GLAAD recommends this for respectful writing.
  • Respect self-identified terminology. The Human Rights Campaign advises following the words people use for themselves, which matters more than any outside label. The HRC glossary of terms sets out its wording on this.
  • Do not treat it as a synonym for “not LGBTQ+.” The term describes cisgender and heterosexual status only. It says nothing else about a person’s identity or community connections.

Where you may encounter it

Viewers of documentaries on gender, sexuality, and social movements will sometimes hear the word in interviews, panel discussions, or narration, especially in films that address generational or community debates. When you hear it, the definition above applies: check whether the speaker is describing a person who meets both descriptors or using the word as an adjective. Reading the sentence in context usually makes the speaker’s point clear.

Sources for the definitions

The definitions above draw on the Cambridge English Dictionary entry for “cishet”, which labels the word informal, and on the Dictionary.com entry for “cishet”, which records the hyphenated variant. The GLAAD and HRC glossaries cited above provide the wording for “cisgender” and the guidance on respectful usage.
