A single rose, a dozen, and two dozen each carry a romantic meaning in florist guides, but the count is a convention of the florist trade rather than a fixed code. Guides agree on some numbers, such as three for “I love you” and twelve for “Be mine,” and disagree on others, so a count works best as one part of a message the recipient can read in context.
Where these meanings come from
The meanings below come from florist-published gift guides, not from a historical record. Three sources were compared for this guide. Teleflora’s page “Learn The Significance of the Number of Roses in a Bouquet” is undated and was accessed on 8 October 2026. Freytag’s Florist published “The Meaning of Roses by the Number” on 21 August 2015 and updated it on 23 October 2019. Flower Street’s “What Different Numbers of Roses Mean” was accessed on 8 October 2026, but its publication date was not shown. None of the three documents a historical origin or a standard that applies everywhere, so read each meaning as a common interpretation.

Counts the sources agree on
One, two and three roses
A single rose is the most personal of the small counts. Teleflora gives it two readings: love at first sight on a first date, or “I still love you” in a relationship that is already established. Freytag’s Florist gives only the first. A pair signals mutual feeling, and three roses are the classic “I love you” count. Both guides also describe three as a traditional one-month anniversary gift, which makes it a natural choice for an early milestone.

- Remove flowers from the box, trim stems 1 inch & place in a vase with fresh water & flower food. We recommend changing the water often to get more bloom life from the bouquet. Keep out of direct sunlight & extreme heat.
Nine, ten and twelve roses
Nine roses are read as a promise of permanence, “We’ll be together forever.” Ten signal perfect love. A dozen is the best-known count in the trade. Freytag’s Florist states it plainly: “A perfect dozen exclaims ‘Be mine!'” Because the dozen is so widely recognised, it is also the count most likely to be read at face value, so it suits a direct romantic gesture.
Fifteen to twenty-five roses
Both guides link fifteen roses with an apology, which makes that count useful for repair rather than romance. Twenty suggests sincere feelings and twenty-one declares dedication. Twenty-five is read as congratulations, so it fits achievements or celebrations more than affection.

Thirty-six to 108 roses
Three dozen expresses being head over heels in love, and forty roses mean genuine love. Fifty or more is described as a gesture of limitless love. The 108-rose count appears only in Freytag’s Florist, where it is offered as a proposal gesture. Teleflora’s page does not give a meaning for 108 in the material reviewed, so do not present the proposal reading as a general rule.
Where the sources disagree
Six roses
Teleflora reads six roses as infatuation. Freytag’s Florist reads the same count as “I miss you.” The gap is large enough that six can send the wrong message to someone who has read either guide.

Thirteen roses
Thirteen is the clearest split in the table. Teleflora calls it a friendship-forever bouquet, while Freytag’s Florist connects it to the “baker’s dozen” and reads it as a secret admirer. A friend who receives thirteen roses may be confused, and a secret admirer who sends them may be surprised by the reaction.
Two dozen and the 24-hour reading
Teleflora and Freytag’s Florist both read twenty-four roses as “I’m yours!” Flower Street offers a different framing: one rose for each hour of the day, showing that the giver is thinking of the recipient all day. Both ideas are romantic, but they are not the same message, so a note or a conversation can make the intended reading clear.

Odd and even counts in other cultures
Flower Street reports that the meaning of a number changes from place to place. It describes an odd-number custom in several European and Slavic traditions, with even-numbered bouquets reserved for funerals. The page does not document how widely that custom is observed, so treat it as a regional tradition rather than a rule that applies to everyone from those places. If the recipient comes from a region with this custom, or you are unsure, ask a local florist or the recipient before choosing an even count for a personal gift.

Teleflora frames the number together with rose type and colour, so a count is rarely the whole message. A practical way to choose is to work through the following steps.

- Artisan‑Handcrafted Floral Design:Each bouquet is individually arranged by skilled florists using roses, hydrangeas, gerberas, ferns, and other premium materials. The hand‑tied construction and layered composition create a distinctive three‑dimensional look. Every arrangement is a one-of-a-kind gift, crafted exclusively for you.
- Advanced Preservation with Natural Texture:The flowers are treated with an updated preservation process that maintains the natural petal texture and softness. No watering or sunlight is required. When kept in suitable conditions, the arrangement retains its shape and color for 3–5 years, offering significantly longer stability than standard fresh‑cut flowers.
- Elegant Gift Packaging:The bouquet comes in a beautifully designed gift box that is ready for presenting as a gift without additional wrapping. Please note that the arrangement does not include a vase; a separate vase is recommended for display to best showcase the floral design.
- Thoughtful Gift for Multiple Occasions:Ideal for birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, and get‑well wishes. Because the flowers are preserved, they are not limited by season and can be kept on display for a long time, making them a lasting alternative to traditional floral gifts.
- Simple Care :Place the bouquet away from direct sunlight, air conditioner vents, or damp areas to maintain its appearance. Unlike fresh flowers that require frequent watering, this arrangement needs minimal daily care, making it suitable for home or office décor.
- Start with the occasion. Match it to a count the guides agree on, such as three roses for an early anniversary, twenty-five for a celebration, or fifteen for an apology.
- Check the count against the recipient. If the recipient knows florist conventions, avoid counts where the guides disagree, such as six and thirteen.
- Consider colour and rose type. Teleflora’s guidance ties the count to these choices, so a dozen red roses and a dozen pale roses are not the same gift.
- Add a card. A written line removes ambiguity, especially for counts with more than one reading, such as twenty-four roses.
Counts that appear only in one source, such as 108 roses as a proposal, are best reserved for cases where the recipient is likely to know that convention.
