In Squid Game, the circle, triangle and square on the guards’ masks identify three staff categories: circle means worker, triangle means soldier, and square means masked manager. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk gave that role mapping in an interview with Tatler Asia, and production designer Chae Kyoung-sun described the ranking as square, then triangle, then circle.
Who said what about the masks
The mask explanation rests on two named interviews from the people who built the show. They agree on the roles and the order, and they give different reasons for the design, so it helps to see which person supports which claim.
| Claim | Who made it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Circles are workers, triangles are soldiers, squares are masked managers | Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator and director | Interview with Tatler Asia |
| The masked staff’s specialized jobs were inspired by ants, with workers assigned distinct roles | Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator and director | Interview with Tatler Asia |
| The shapes were inspired by the board drawn on the ground for the game | Chae Kyoung-sun, production designer | Interview with Korea JoongAng Daily |
| Rank order is square, triangle, circle, chosen by each shape’s number of vertices | Chae Kyoung-sun, production designer | Interview with Korea JoongAng Daily |
The creator’s statement, as printed in the Tatler Asia interview, reads: “The circles are the workers, triangles are the soldiers and the ones with the square are the masked managers. I got this idea from the work of ants.”
The three guard categories
Each mark corresponds to one tier. The categories are fixed by the mask, so a viewer can read a guard’s rank at a glance without needing a name or a line of dialogue.

Circle: worker
Circle-mask guards are the workers, the lowest of the three tiers. Hwang’s ant analogy is the closest thing to a design rationale for this tier: in an ant colony, individuals perform different jobs, and the show applies that idea to the masked staff. The sources describe the division of labor in general terms only.
Triangle: soldier
Triangle-mask guards are the soldiers, sitting between the workers and the managers. Chae’s ranking places the triangle above the circle and below the square.
Rank #2
- OFFICIALLY LICENSED SQUARE MASK FROM SQUID GAME - Become the highest tier henchmen with this Squid Game Square mask!
- AUTHENTIC SQUID GAME COSTUME ACCESSORY - This mask has a square print on the front that matches the real look on the Netflix series

Square: manager
Square-mask guards are the masked managers, the top of the three-tier sequence. Hwang’s wording is “masked managers,” which is the term to use when describing this tier.
Why these three shapes
The shapes have two separate explanations, and they do not conflict. One concerns where the shapes come from; the other concerns how the ranking was set.

The game board origin
Chae says the team took the circle, triangle and square from the shape of the board drawn on the ground for the traditional children’s game Squid Game. In her words, “For the shapes — the circle, triangle and square — we were inspired by the squid-shaped board drawn on the ground for the actual squid game.” This ties the mask marks to the show’s central game, which is why the motif reads as part of the story world rather than an arbitrary graphic.
The vertex-count ranking
Chae also says the hierarchy follows each shape’s number of vertices, producing the order square, then triangle, then circle. A square has four vertices and a triangle has three, which matches that sequence. A circle has no vertices in standard geometry, which is consistent with it sitting at the bottom. Chae’s interview states the vertex-count principle; it does not list the counts, so the geometry here is an explanation of her rule rather than a quotation from her.

Where the shapes reappear
The motif is not limited to the guards’ faces. Chae says the production planted the shapes in many places throughout the story, and she did not identify every location in her interview. Netflix’s Tudum explanation of the Season 3 finale describes three Sky Squid Game towers shaped as a square, a triangle and a circle. That is a clear later use of the same three forms.
The sources do not say that the towers stand for the guard ranks. A square-triangle-circle appearance therefore confirms the visual motif, but it does not by itself carry the same rank meaning as a guard’s mask. Read each recurrence on its own terms unless a scene-specific source ties it to the hierarchy.

What the sources do not establish
The interviews cover three guard categories and their order, and nothing beyond that. Several questions readers often ask fall outside what the sources confirm.
- A chain of command above the managers. The design interviews do not describe who sits above the square-mask managers.
- Promotion between ranks. The sources do not say whether a worker can become a soldier or a manager, and they do not describe any advancement process.
- Duties in individual scenes. The interviews name the roles but do not assign tasks to each mask in particular episodes.
- The Front Man’s mask. Netflix’s Tudum interview with the Front Man discusses the character’s context, but the design interviews do not place his distinctive mask within the circle, triangle and square hierarchy. Treat him as separate from the three guard ranks.
- Fan theories. Claims about hidden codes, extra symbolism in other mask designs, or rank advancement are not confirmed by the production team in the sources available here.
The short version is that the masks are a visual system with three marks, three roles and one stated order. Anything beyond that is interpretation, and the article’s clearest evidence concerns those three guard marks.
