In Pablo Larraín’s Maria, Mandrax is a journalist character played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, not a real reporter identified by the available sources. The name also refers to methaqualone: Netflix’s film explainer connects it to the sedative in the movie’s story, while historical research identifies Mandrax as a South African brand name for the drug. The sources do not establish that Maria Callas actually hallucinated a journalist by that name.
Who is Mandrax in Maria?
Mandrax is a journalist who joins Maria Callas in Paris to interview her. Netflix’s official explainer identifies Kodi Smit-McPhee as the actor playing him and says the character shares his name with a hypnotic sedative associated with Callas’s final days in the film’s story. Netflix’s explainer describes the movie’s portrayal; it does not identify Mandrax as a historical journalist.

Is the journalist a real person?
The sources available do not establish that a real journalist named Mandrax existed or that the character is based on a verified real-world counterpart. Treat him as a character in Maria, rather than as a documented figure from Callas’s life.
That distinction also matters when interpreting the film’s depiction of Callas. The movie connects Mandrax to a sedative and presents him in the story, but the cited sources do not prove that Callas experienced this specific hallucination in real life.

Why is the character called Mandrax?
The name has a historical drug connection. An IRD-hosted research report identifies Mandrax as a South African brand name for methaqualone, a sedative and hypnotic. That history helps explain the name’s association in the film, but it does not make the journalist real or verify the film’s events as biography.
The report discusses historical manufacturing, prohibition and illicit markets in a regional context. It is not a guide to present-day availability, medical use or legal status.

What do historical records say about methaqualone?
A U.S. congressional hearing record published in 2001 contains testimony about methaqualone diversion and counterfeit Quaaludes in the late 1970s and early 1980s. One witness said a U.S. company was producing about seven metric tons annually for legitimate medical use at the time. The same witness estimated that roughly 150 metric tons of bulk methaqualone were being diverted and counterfeited each year. Those are attributed historical figures, not current statistics. The hearing record does not establish present-day prevalence, availability or legal status.

The documentary Maria by Callas is distinct from Larraín’s dramatic film Maria. Its distributor, Sony Pictures Classics, describes the documentary as using Callas’s own voice and archival material, including an interview with David Frost, letters, photographs, home movies and performances. That description explains the documentary’s source material; it does not verify the Mandrax character or the specific hallucination shown in the drama. Sony Pictures Classics’ page for Maria by Callas provides that documentary context.
