Wearing a safety pin can mean different things. In the UK campaign that followed the 2016 EU referendum, it was intended as a visible sign of solidarity with immigrants and people at risk of racist or xenophobic abuse. In punk fashion, it may be a style choice or subcultural marker; in everyday use, it may simply fasten or repair clothing. The pin alone does not establish what its wearer believes or whether they would help someone facing abuse.
What the safety pin meant in the 2016 solidarity campaign
After the UK referendum on EU membership, reports of racist and xenophobic abuse prompted a campaign encouraging people to wear a visible safety pin. A Guardian report published on 29 June 2016 described the idea as coming from Allison, an American living in London, who wanted an inexpensive, readily available way to show immigrants that others would stand with them. The hashtag spread on social media. The Guardian’s account of the campaign explains its immediate context.
The intended message was more than “I support you” in the abstract: campaigners presented the pin as a recognizable signal that its wearer would stand up for someone facing abuse. That was the campaign’s aim, not a guarantee about every individual who wore one. A visible symbol can invite conversation or offer reassurance, but it cannot demonstrate how its wearer would act in a particular situation.
Why it was criticized as a symbol on its own
Some contemporary critics argued that wearing a pin could become a passive or self-congratulatory gesture if it was not accompanied by action. In a Guardian opinion column, Eva Wiseman challenged wearers to speak up as well as display the symbol. Her column makes that case. Washington Post coverage documented criticism of the campaign’s later adoption in the United States, too. That report describes the debate.

These were critiques of what a symbol can accomplish without follow-through, not proof that every wearer had the same motives. In practice, support is better judged by a person’s words and actions than by a pin alone.
Other meanings: punk style and practical use
Punk and customized clothing
Safety pins have also appeared on customized punk clothing. In that setting, they can function as a visual style choice or subcultural marker, rather than a statement about the 2016 campaign. The London Museum documents their use in punk dress, while the Metropolitan Museum of Art discusses punk’s visual language and its influence on fashion. London Museum’s account and the Met’s overview of punk fashion place the object in those broader contexts.

Fastening or repair
A safety pin may simply hold fabric together, secure a hem temporarily, or serve another practical purpose. Without context, an observer cannot reliably tell whether it is a political signal, part of an outfit, or just doing its ordinary job.

The Guardian reported that initial National Police Chiefs’ Council figures showed a 57% rise in reported incidents after the EU referendum in 2016. This figure describes a contemporary increase in reported incidents in the immediate post-referendum period. It is not a current rate, and it does not show that wearing safety pins reduced harassment. The report gives the statistic in its original context.

How to read the signal
- If the wearer explains it as solidarity: understand it as an intended expression of support, not a promise or credential.
- If it is part of customized or punk clothing: it may be aesthetic or subcultural.
- If it is fastening fabric: it may have no message beyond its practical use.
- If you need to know what someone means: ask rather than infer their politics or character from the object.
