In Japanese, yuri (百合, ゆり) means “lily.” The same pronunciation can also be a feminine given name, while in anime and manga discussion yuri is a label for fiction about intimacy or romance between women. The written form and context determine which meaning applies.
What does yuri mean as a Japanese word?
The Japanese word 百合 is read yuri and means “lily.” It can also be written in katakana as ユリ. The sound alone does not identify the spelling or meaning in every use.
Is Yuri a Japanese name?
Yes. Yuri is used as a feminine given name, but a person’s name may be written with different kanji or kana. If you mean a particular person or character, check how their name is written rather than assuming it means “lily.”
What does yuri mean in anime and manga?
In media and fandom discussion, yuri describes fiction depicting attraction, romance, emotional closeness, or sexual relationships between women or girls. The category includes stories with subtle romantic intimacy as well as more explicit material; the label alone does not tell you a work’s tone or level of sexual content.

Is yuri the same as Girls’ Love?
Girls’ Love, often shortened to GL, is a related label commonly used interchangeably with yuri. Usage varies between works and communities, so the terms do not form a universally precise taxonomy.
Does yuri mean a character is lesbian?
No. Yuri is a genre label, not an identity label. A work categorized as yuri does not necessarily establish how its characters identify, and the genre does not map neatly onto lesbian identity or the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Describe the relationship and the work’s own characterization rather than using the genre term to assign an identity to a real person.

A commonly cited early association dates to the 1970s, when Itō Bungaku, editor of the gay men’s magazine Barazoku, used Yurizoku no Heya (“Lily Tribe’s Room”) as a column for female readers. The women who wrote to the column were not all lesbians, and the term in that context was not simply a synonym for “lesbian.” This is an important early association, not proof of the term’s first-ever use.
Scholar Marta Fanasca writes that “The word yuri literally means ‘lily’” and notes its association with female homosexuality in the 1970s through Barazoku (“Tales of Lilies and Girls’ Love,” Library of Congress).
