In Bridgerton, “ward” is the public label Lord Penwood uses for Sophie, his daughter by a maid. He raises and supports her without openly acknowledging her as his child; after his death, his wife Araminta makes Sophie work as a maid. The distinction between Sophie’s public status and her real family history drives her struggle to enter society.
Why does Lord Penwood call Sophie his ward?
A ward is someone under another person’s care or guardianship. Penwood uses that description for Sophie because publicly claiming her as his biological daughter would expose the circumstances of her birth and invite scandal. In private, he is her father, and he raises her with advantages befitting his position. Netflix’s explanation of Sophie’s childhood describes her as Penwood’s illegitimate daughter and says her mother was a maid.
“Ward,” then, describes the arrangement people are meant to see—not Sophie’s actual relationship to Penwood. The gap between the label and the truth shapes how Sophie is treated, especially after Penwood dies.
What happens to Sophie’s place in the Penwood household?
Araminta joins the family

Penwood’s death changes Sophie’s life
After Penwood dies, Araminta puts Sophie to work as a maid in the household. Sophie’s privileged upbringing gives way to domestic work and a far more precarious position. Showrunner Jess Brownell said Sophie is made to work for a family that treats her with less respect than the maids receive at Bridgerton or Featherington House. Netflix’s Season 4 character guide also describes Sophie’s shift from Penwood’s ward to a household maid.
What does Penwood’s will mean for Sophie?
The story does not make Sophie heir to the earldom. Instead, the Bridgertons discover that Penwood’s will provided a dowry for her. They use the will and evidence of Araminta’s wrongdoing to press her to support a socially acceptable account of Sophie’s background. Queen Charlotte accepts that account, allowing Sophie to enter society; Benedict and Sophie marry.

The resolution is about securing Sophie’s social acceptance, not legally changing her parentage. Netflix’s account describes the public explanation as a false but acceptable story of her legitimacy. The dowry matters because it shows Penwood made financial provision for Sophie, even though he did not publicly present her as his daughter.

Season 4 is inspired by Julia Quinn’s novel An Offer from a Gentleman, as Netflix and Shondaland note. The events described above concern the Netflix series; the show’s adaptation should not be treated as a scene-by-scene account of the book. Shondaland’s introduction to the new family in the Ton also identifies Sophie as the earl’s daughter.
