What does Paul’s death mean?
One reading is that Paul’s sacrifice marks a handoff: his sons are no longer protected by him, and must put what he taught them into practice together. The director’s statement offers relevant context, but not a definitive explanation of the finale. Benjamin Brewer said, “What drew me to the project was the brothers at the center of the story and their close bond.” He also described giving familiar coming-of-age tropes “a dark fairytale hue” in an apocalypse setting. That supports seeing the brothers’ relationship as central; it does not prove that Brewer intended one exclusive symbolic meaning for Paul’s death.
Why does the attack under the house matter?
The creatures tunneling beneath the foundation undermines the family’s basic idea of safety. A fortified home and routines built around the danger after dark can no longer be trusted in the same way once the threat comes from below. The teenagers’ escape ends the immediate confrontation, not the danger beyond it.
