The arrow sequence on one reported casing, up, right, then three down arrows, matches the input code for the Eagle 500kg bomb in the cooperative shooter Helldivers 2. Online, that code has become a joke about an oversized or decisive action. The casing also carried the phrase “Hey Fascist! Catch!”, which makes the reference provocative. Reporting does not show, however, why the accused chose it, and the meme itself does not establish a motive or a coherent political ideology.
What the arrow sequence refers to
According to WIRED’s September 12, 2025 reporting, one casing bore the words “Hey Fascist! Catch!” followed by an arrow pattern: up, right, and three down arrows. WIRED identified that pattern as an apparent input for the Eagle 500kg bomb, a stratagem in Helldivers 2. In the game, a player enters the directional sequence and a large bomb is called in on the enemy. The sequence is not a political symbol in itself; it is a game command that players can recognize at a glance.

Steam’s store page for HELLDIVERS 2 gives the basic facts used in the reporting:
- Genre: a cooperative third-person shooter.
- Developer: Arrowhead Game Studios.
- Publisher: PlayStation Publishing LLC.
- Release date: February 8, 2024.
- Squad size: up to four Helldivers per squad.
These are product facts. They say nothing about the beliefs or intentions of anyone who used the game’s code.

Why the word “fascist” lands differently in this game
WIRED describes Helldivers 2 as satire, set in a Starship Troopers-like story in which players fight fictional alien enemies. The game’s fictional “managed democracy” and its military slogans are written to be mocking. A reader who knows the game can see why an authoritarian-sounding phrase would appear beside a game code. That reading explains the reference; it does not show what the writer meant by it.
How the Eagle 500kg code became a meme
WIRED reports that the sequence has been used online to signal that someone is about to do something big or violent, and that the bomb is treated in the player community as comically excessive. This is why the code can read as a cheeky line rather than a formal message. Know Your Meme’s editor in chief, Don Caldwell, told WIRED of the casing: “That’s maybe a cheeky way of expressing it.” The phrase works as a meme because it borrows an in-game tone of overreaction.

The other reported inscriptions
Al Jazeera’s account of the prosecutors’ filing lists four messages. The table below sets out what each one is tied to in the reporting cited here.

The mixture matters. The inscriptions draw on a folk song, a furry meme, a game command and a crude taunt. Each has a recognizable origin, but together they do not form one key that decodes the whole event.

What the reporting says the accused wrote
Reporting from September 2025 describes alleged messages in which Robinson told his roommate and romantic partner that he had “enough of his hatred” and called the inscriptions “mostly a big meme.” These statements come from case materials and are allegations, not established facts. They sit alongside the uncertainty about the casing references and do not settle it.
Motive: what is established and what is not
It helps to separate two questions: where a reference comes from, and what it proves about motive. The first can be answered. The second cannot be answered from the inscriptions alone.

- Established by the reporting: the arrow pattern matches a named game input, and the other phrases have recognizable online or cultural origins.
- Reported as allegations from case materials: the accused’s messages describing the inscriptions as “mostly a big meme.”
- Not established: why the accused chose these references; whether they reflect a coherent political ideology; whether the game, online spaces or any community influenced the act.
Readers should also not assume that players of the game share the accused’s views. WIRED’s reporting treats the game as satire that most players understand as a joke, and The Washington Post stresses that these references are widely shared rather than exclusive ideological signals.

Know Your Meme’s Don Caldwell
Caldwell’s comment to WIRED was limited to the casing itself: the Eagle 500kg reference is a playful way of expressing an exaggerated action. He did not present it as a statement about the accused.

The author and extremism expert told The Washington Post: “It’s a chicken-and-egg situation as far as whether these [online] spaces attract killers or create them, but these spaces definitely shape the kind of killer someone will be.” This is a broad view of online spaces. It is not a finding that a particular game caused this crime.
Joan Donovan and the Critical Internet Studies Institute
Joan Donovan, an assistant professor of journalism at Boston University, told TIME that memes can show what someone finds funny or signal affiliation with online subcultures, and that their ambiguity is central to how they work. The Washington Post reports that the Critical Internet Studies Institute urged “caution in reading too much” into the details of the case and described the memes as “almost deliberately ambiguous.” These are analyses of meme culture, not diagnoses of the accused.
Legal status and early misinformation
The shooting took place on September 10, 2025, according to Al Jazeera’s report on the court filing. The most recent court update cited here is an Associated Press report from July 7, 2026. It says Robinson had not entered a plea, that a preliminary hearing was underway, and that prosecutors were presenting evidence to show the case should go to trial. The AP also reported that the defense had challenged aspects of the evidence and was seeking to remove the death penalty. Proceedings may have moved on since that report, so current court records are the place to confirm the status.
Early online claims about the accused’s politics were also inaccurate. An AP fact-check from September 2025 reported that Utah records showed Robinson was registered to vote but not affiliated with either major party, and that a claim he belonged to the Democratic Socialists of America was false. Those details do not explain the memes, but they show why political labels applied from online posts should be treated with caution.

How to describe the case accurately
Use “the accused,” “the defendant,” or “prosecutors allege” when describing the messages and motive. Identify the Eagle 500kg reference as a game input, and attribute the reading of the other inscriptions to the reporting or expert who offered it. Avoid implying that the game community is responsible for the crime, and avoid presenting the game’s satire as a political confession.
