A 2011 TheWrap report cited conflicting estimates for four films: close to $350 million from one source familiar with the deals, and closer to $280 million from another source close to the franchise. Disney called the higher figure “highly inaccurate” but did not provide its own total.
Because published figures mix requested salaries, reported fees, testimony about several projects, and possible backend participation, the available evidence does not establish a reliable ranking of Depp’s highest-paid individual movie roles.
What is Johnny Depp’s highest-paid movie role?
No available figure proves which single movie role paid Depp the most. The largest reported amount is a disputed, franchise-wide estimate for four Pirates of the Caribbean films. It is not a confirmed salary for any one installment, and the two estimates differ substantially.
| Reported figure | What it covers | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Close to $350 million | Depp’s earnings across four Pirates films | TheWrap, 2011, citing one source with knowledge of the deals; Disney called the figure “highly inaccurate” and supplied no alternative total. |
| Closer to $280 million | Depp’s earnings across the same four-film span | TheWrap, 2011, citing a separate individual close to the franchise. This was also an anonymous estimate, not an audited total. |
The estimates are not interchangeable with a per-film fee. TheWrap reported that the deals included a share of profits after a “cash break”—the point at which the studio had recovered production and marketing costs—and described this as different from a traditional share of gross earnings. It also reported separate deals for different installments. The report does not provide a consistent breakdown of upfront pay and backend earnings by film.

What other movie-pay figures have been reported?
The figures below are useful points of comparison, but they measure different things and come from different kinds of reporting. A fee for a particular role, a requested salary, and testimony about earnings across multiple films should not be ranked as though they were equivalent.
| Film or deal | Reported amount | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Into the Woods | $1 million | Vanity Fair reported in 2014 that Depp spent one week on set and took the role as a favor to director Rob Marshall. |
| Waiting for the Barbarians | $1 million | TheWrap reported the figure in 2022 while covering talent manager Jack Whigham’s trial testimony. |
| Minamata | $3 million | TheWrap reported Whigham’s testimony about the negotiated deal; the fee was reduced to help save the film. |
| City of Lies, Murder on the Orient Express, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and The Professor | $35 million combined | TheWrap reported in 2022 that Whigham testified Depp earned this total across the four 2017 projects. The report did not allocate it among the films. |
| Depp’s reported “quote” | $20 million per film | Vanity Fair characterized this in 2014 as his requested salary—not confirmation that he received that amount for every film. |
| Pirates of the Caribbean 6 deal | $22.5 million | TheWrap reported in 2022 that Whigham testified to a deal negotiated in 2017. The film was not made, so this is not pay earned for a completed role. |
The reported figures come from entertainment reporting, anonymous deal sources, and courtroom testimony, rather than one studio-certified accounting. The sources do not establish a complete film-by-film compensation ledger. In particular, the four-project $35 million total is not a disclosed fee for each of those roles.

How much did Johnny Depp make for Pirates of the Caribbean?
The best-supported answer is that published estimates put Depp’s earnings across four Pirates films somewhere between roughly $280 million and $350 million, but neither amount is verified. TheWrap’s July 5, 2011 report said one person familiar with the deals estimated close to $350 million, while another person close to the franchise put the total nearer $280 million. Disney disputed the higher estimate, calling it “highly inaccurate,” and declined to provide details.
Those figures describe reported compensation across several installments, including deal structures with backend participation; they do not show how much Depp received for each movie. The report’s description of a profit share after the studio’s “cash break” also means the franchise estimates cannot be treated as simple upfront salaries.

Is there a reliable figure for Depp’s Alice in Wonderland salary?
The sources cited here do not establish a reliable salary figure for Alice in Wonderland. Without a substantiated amount and a clear description of what it measures, it should not be presented as one of Depp’s highest-paid roles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why reported movie salaries are hard to compare
- Requested salary is not confirmed pay. Vanity Fair’s 2014 $20 million figure was described as Depp’s requested “quote,” not a payment verified for each film.
- A franchise estimate is not a single-film fee. The two Pirates amounts cover four films and were attributed to unnamed sources.
- Backend participation can change totals. A deal involving a share of profits after cost recovery is not directly comparable to a stated upfront fee.
- Combined earnings do not identify individual salaries. The reported $35 million covers four projects, with no allocation among them.
- A negotiated deal for an unmade film is not earnings from a role. The reported Pirates 6 amount relates to a project that did not proceed with Depp.
Accordingly, the published reporting supports identifying Pirates of the Caribbean as Depp’s most lucrative reported film franchise, but not naming a definitively highest-paid individual movie role.
