E-girl and e-boy are flexible internet labels for people associated with alternative online self-presentation and aesthetics—not formal identities with a required look or checklist. Depending on context, either term can be a self-description, compliment, meme, or insult. Their meaning has shifted over time, and the labels do not describe two fixed or mutually exclusive groups.
What do “e-girl” and “e-boy” mean?
The “e” points to the labels’ online associations, but it does not establish a specific identity or set of qualifications. People may use the terms for themselves, apply them to someone else’s style, or invoke them jokingly or dismissively. Context matters: the same label can be affectionate in one setting and insulting in another.
Dictionary.com describes its “egirl and eboy” entry as an informal account of usage, not a formal definition. That distinction is useful: there is no single authoritative checklist for deciding who counts as an e-girl or e-boy.
How did the labels develop?
The terms do not have one established origin story. Christine H. Tran’s 2022 scholarly article notes an early Urban Dictionary entry for “egirl” dating to 2009 and analyzes how the word was used as a sexualized slur in online gaming discourse. Tran also traces how some women game influencers reclaimed “egirl” as a form of self-branding between 2018 and 2021. The article focuses on “egirl” and women’s livestreaming discourse; its findings should not automatically be applied to every e-boy or every person who uses either label.

Dictionary.com describes the words’ associations shifting through the 2000s and 2010s, including connections to emo and alternative aesthetics, gaming, and anime. It also recounts the “E-girl Factory” meme spreading on TikTok in early 2019 and an “E-boy Factory” parody that followed. That episode helped popularize the labels, but it was not necessarily the moment either term was invented.
The slur history reflects gendered disputes about who is treated as a legitimate gamer or streamer. It is a history of how the word has been used—not evidence that stereotypes about women gaming for attention are true.

What is the style associated with e-girls and e-boys?
TikTok for Business’s July 29, 2021 account describes the #egirl and #eboy aesthetic as drawing on cosplay, anime, goth, hip-hop, and skateboarding. These are examples from a platform business article, not a definitive or current style guide.
E-girl examples
TikTok’s examples include candy-colored hair, cat-eye makeup, bright pink blush, fake freckles, and small heart stamps. Someone can borrow any of these styling ideas without adopting the label. Makeup is optional; buying or wearing products does not make someone an e-girl.

E-boy examples
TikTok characterizes e-boys as embracing androgyny, with an edgy twist on a “soft boy” look. As with the e-girl examples, this is one description of a recognizable aesthetic, not a rule that all e-boys follow.
The labels are gendered in their wording, but real people may not fit binary assumptions. The styling examples also overlap with broader alternative and online cultures, so appearance alone cannot settle what a label means in a particular interaction.

What does the subculture have to do with online visibility?
In a 2020 essay in the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Melanie Kennedy places TikTok’s visibility in a longer history of girl culture and celebrity. Kennedy argues that public circulation and platform metrics can turn bedroom culture—often associated with private spaces—into something exposed to surveillance and evaluation. This is a scholarly interpretation of platform culture, not a claim that every creator experiences TikTok in the same way.
