In April 2022, Futurism reported that Elon Musk posted—and later deleted—a meme showing Better Call Saul’s Saul Goodman saying, “In all fairness your honor, my client was in ‘goblin mode.’” The joke turns a slang phrase for rejecting social expectations into a mock legal defense. What the post does not establish is why Musk shared it or what it says about his own habits.
What was Elon Musk’s “goblin mode” tweet?
Futurism’s April 12, 2022 report described a meme featuring Saul Goodman, the fictional lawyer from Better Call Saul, with the caption: “In all fairness your honor, my client was in ‘goblin mode.’” Futurism also reported that Musk deleted the tweet. The original post and its context are not independently established here, so those details are best understood as Futurism’s account of the post.
The caption borrows the format of a courtroom excuse: a lawyer appears to explain away a client’s behavior by naming it “goblin mode.” That comic framing is not itself a dictionary definition, and it does not reveal Musk’s motive for sharing the meme.
What does “goblin mode” mean?
Oxford University Press defines “goblin mode” as “a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.” The usual forms are “in goblin mode” and “go goblin mode.” The phrase describes slang usage, not a clinical or diagnostic condition.

In the meme, the phrase works as a deliberately broad, humorous defense. Oxford’s definition is broader than the joke’s courtroom setup: it encompasses behavior that is self-indulgent or messy, as well as behavior that rejects expectations or social norms.
Why was the phrase prominent in 2022?
Oxford University Press named “goblin mode” its 2022 Word of the Year after a public vote. Oxford reported more than 340,000 votes, with “goblin mode” receiving 93% of them. Its retrospective says the phrase went viral on social media in February 2022 and seemed to capture a mood among people resisting a return to normal life after the pandemic.

When Oxford introduced the phrase as a candidate, before the vote, American linguist, lexicographer, and language columnist Ben Zimmer said: “I think that Goblin Mode really does speak to the times and the zeitgeist, and it is certainly a 2022 expression!” His comment speaks to the phrase’s cultural resonance at that moment; the later vote established its Word of the Year result.

The available reporting does not establish why Musk posted the meme. It is fair to read the caption as a joke about excusing behavior with a trendy phrase, but that is an interpretation of the meme, not evidence of Musk’s personal habits, state of mind, or political strategy.
