In Wednesday Season 2, Grandmama is Hester Frump, Morticia’s mother and Wednesday’s maternal grandmother, played by Joanna Lumley. The series makes her a wealthy mortuary mogul and brings her into the center of a three-generation family conflict. Co-creator Alfred Gough says the move grew from a desire to expand Addams family mythology and bring more relatives into Nevermore’s story.
Who is Hester Frump?
Hester is Morticia’s mother and Wednesday’s maternal grandmother. Netflix’s Season 2 cast guide identifies her as the mogul behind Frump Mortuaries, which it describes as one of the country’s most successful outcast-owned businesses. Joanna Lumley plays the character.
The cast guide presents Hester as emotionally cold, sharp-tongued, and calculating about both her business empire and her family’s legacy. That combination makes her more than a newly introduced relative: she arrives with power, expectations, and her own ideas about how the Frump family should be remembered.
What changed about Grandmama in Season 2?
The season gives Hester a defined place in Wednesday’s on-screen family story and makes her a formidable presence in its family drama. Rather than appearing only as a background elder, she is an influential businesswoman whose relationships with Morticia and Wednesday matter to the story.

This is a description of Wednesday’s version of Hester, not a claim that the series changed one definitive Addams Family canon. The available sources explain the adaptation’s characterization but do not provide a systematic comparison with every earlier television, film, or comic version.
Why did the co-creators bring Hester into the story?
Gough said the creators saw how much audiences enjoyed the Addams family in Season 1 and felt there was relatively little family lore to draw on. As he put it, “there really isn’t a lot of Addams family lore that exists.” Their response was to build more mythology and bring additional family members to Nevermore. Netflix’s feature on the Addams women describes the result as a way to deepen the older generations’ tensions and Wednesday’s resistance to Morticia’s involvement.

Gough calls the relationship among Wednesday, Morticia, and Hester a “delicious family triangle.” Hester’s arrival creates a new angle on the mother-daughter dynamic: Wednesday can have a bond with her grandmother even as Hester and Morticia clash.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Joanna Lumley describe Hester’s relationships?
Lumley’s account emphasizes Hester’s boldness, cruelty, and habit of getting her own way. In Netflix’s official Season 2 Woecast, Lumley describes Hester as having a particular bond with Wednesday while picking on Morticia. That is the actor’s interpretation of the character; Gough’s explanation of the creative choice is the separate point that the show wanted to expand Addams family mythology.
