In a Whose Line Is It Anyway? police-lineup sketch, Wayne Brady was the only Black performer asked to stand among the suspects. After Ryan Stiles prompted a witness to identify a robber, Brady called out the implication; a later exchange with host Aisha Tyler reversed the question toward economic and structural harms. Brady shared the clip again in June 2020, prompting renewed discussion—but the available reporting does not verify when the original sketch aired or document a separate interview in which he reflected on it.
How the police-lineup sketch begins
Access Hollywood’s June 9, 2020 video description identifies the performers in the old sketch as Brady, Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie and guest performer Jonathan Mangum. Stiles asks, “Can you pick out the man that robbed you?” Brady is the only person of color in the lineup. Access Hollywood’s clip and description establish the setup; the racial implication comes from the scene’s visual arrangement and prompt.
Brady calls attention to the premise
Comic Sands’ June 10 account reports that Brady looks uncomfortable, then turns to the audience and says, “Y’all know that’s f***ed up, right?” The line makes the uneasy premise explicit rather than letting the lineup pass as an unremarked gag. This description of his reaction follows the account’s reporting; it should not be taken as a claim about what he intended beyond what is shown and said in the clip. Comic Sands’ account reproduces the dialogue.
Tyler and Brady reverse the question
The clip then cuts to a later moment with Brady and host Aisha Tyler. As Comic Sands reports it, Tyler asks, “Sir, can you pick out the man that embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars in the American economy, and then made you pay for it?” Brady responds with a line about education and neighborhood segregation; Tyler adds barriers to loans, homes, jobs, businesses and car leases. The exchange redirects the lineup’s identification game from an individual robber toward harms the performers frame as systemic. That is the scene’s reversal, not evidence that the sketch establishes a factual comparison between particular people or events.

Why the clip resurfaced in June 2020
Brady shared the older clip on social media in June 2020. His reported caption included: “When you’re joking but not really. When comedy and the truth meet up…” Access Hollywood published its video on June 9, Comic Sands covered the clip on June 10, and a CNN transcript dated June 11 records anchor Brianna Keilar asking Tyler about it. The CNN conversation widened into discussion of policing, racism, representation and funding diverse voices behind the camera. CNN’s June 11, 2020 transcript documents that broader discussion.
The available accounts support saying Brady shared the sketch and that it prompted renewed discussion. They do not establish a separate interview in which he reflects on this exact segment, so the caption is the documented personal comment rather than proof of a later interview.

When did the original sketch air?
The original broadcast date is not verified by the sources documenting the clip’s 2020 circulation. A fan transcript page dated September 23, 1998 refers to a different episode, not this lineup sketch; it cannot be used to date the scene. The unrelated transcript page is therefore not evidence of the lineup sketch’s air date.
