Yes—the cast of Steven Spielberg’s 2021 West Side Story performed their characters’ vocals. But that does not mean every vocal in the finished film was recorded live on set as the cameras rolled. The available production accounts describe vocal work shaped around the actors’ performances, without documenting exactly how each song or scene was recorded.
Did the actors sing their own parts in the 2021 film?
The evidence supports that the actors supplied the singing voices for their roles. The official film page credits Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori with working with cast members on vocals. The 20th Century Studios cast page identifies the performers in Spielberg’s film.

Grammy’s account of the film’s reimagining of “I Feel Pretty” describes vocal recording being timed so Tesori could hear the actors’ choices and keep the singing true to those performances. That points to vocal work integrated with the acting, rather than an account of the cast simply being replaced by other singers.
Were the vocals recorded live on set?
That is a separate question, and the available accounts do not answer it for every song. Having the cast perform the vocals does not establish whether a finished vocal was captured live during filming, recorded separately, or assembled using both approaches.

The official film page also credits music professionals for the score: Matt Sullivan as executive music producer and Gustavo Dudamel in connection with recording Leonard Bernstein’s score. Those credits concern the music and orchestral score; they do not specify how each actor’s vocal track was captured. The sources do not provide a scene-by-scene or song-by-song recording log, so claims that every song was sung live on set—or that the cast was dubbed—go beyond what they establish.
Why do people ask whether West Side Story was dubbed?
The question often draws on the 1961 film’s distinct dubbing history. The franchise’s official fact sheet discusses Marni Nixon’s contribution to Maria’s vocals in that earlier movie. That history does not show who sang for the performers in Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation.
Disney says the 2021 film drew on the 1957 stage play rather than adapting the 1961 movie. Naming the year helps keep the versions straight: the older film’s dubbing story should not be carried over as an answer about the newer cast.

The official 2021 film page documents the West Side Story Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in CD and vinyl formats and lists 21 songs. It offers a way to listen to the film’s musical performances, though the track listing does not reveal whether a given vocal was recorded live on set.
