Marisa Abela plays Amy Winehouse in Back to Black, a 2024 biographical feature directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. The first teaser, released by StudioCanal in January 2024, introduced Abela in the role and used Winehouse’s 2006 song “Back to Black” as its musical backbone. The film is a biographical drama rather than a documentary, so the trailer shows an actor’s portrayal of Winehouse, not archive footage of her.
What the January 2024 teaser shows
Two outlets covered the first look, and they describe it differently. The Motion Picture Association published its item on January 11, 2024 and called it the first trailer for the Amy Winehouse biopic. Rolling Stone Australia, in a piece by Emily Zemler dated January 12, 2024, called it the first international teaser. Both place the release in January 2024, and the difference is one of wording rather than substance.
The teaser centres on Abela. Its spoken line, attributed to her portrayal of Winehouse, is “I want to be remembered for just being me.” That is dialogue delivered by an actor in the trailer. It is not a recorded statement by the real Winehouse, and it should not be quoted as one.

How the film frames Winehouse
The official synopsis, reproduced in the Rolling Stone Australia and Motion Picture Association coverage, describes the film this way:
“Painting a vivid, vibrant picture of the Camden streets she called home and capturing the struggles of global fame, Back to Black honors Amy’s artistry, wit, and honesty, as well as trying to understand her demons. An unflinching look at the modern celebrity machine and a powerful tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent.”

That description is the studio’s framing, not an independent assessment of the film. Taylor-Johnson, in a statement quoted by Rolling Stone Australia, explained her own connection to the subject: “My connection to Amy began when I left college and was hanging out in the creatively diverse London borough of Camden,” and she recalled first seeing Winehouse “perform at a talent show at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho,” adding that it was “immediately obvious she wasn’t just ’talent’… she was genius.” These are the director’s own recollections, and they are presented here as her account.

Two different releases called Back to Black
The title is shared by three things: the film, Winehouse’s 2006 album, and its title song. A 2024 compilation tied to the film also carries a similar name, and it is not the same recording set as the original album.
