Papyrus 2 is a digital Saturday Night Live sequel to the 2017 sketch about a man tormented by the typeface in the Avatar logo. Ryan Gosling returns as Steven Wingdings, whose attempt to avoid Papyrus triggers takes a new turn when he sees Avatar: The Way of Water.
What is Papyrus 2?
It is an online follow-up to the original Papyrus sketch, not a feature film. The sequel was released online after Gosling’s SNL episode on April 13, 2024; it was not shown during that week’s broadcast. TheWrap described it as nearly seven minutes long. What happens in the sequel?
Steven is trying to control his fixation on Papyrus and steer clear of reminders of the font. When he sees Avatar: The Way of Water, he first believes its logo has moved on from Papyrus. The sketch’s punchline is that the lettering is Papyrus set in bold. That discovery reignites his obsession, which the story then turns into a personal family revelation.
The “Papyrus in bold” explanation is the sketch’s comic premise, not an independently verified analysis of the film logo’s typography.

How the original sketch set up the joke
The 2017 sketch introduced Steven Wingdings as a man unable to let go of the first Avatar film’s use of Papyrus in its logo. His irritation escalates into an all-consuming fixation. The Credits reports that former SNL writer Julio Torres developed the idea from a tweet: “Every day I wake up and remember that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster, used the Papyrus font for their logo and no one stopped them.” The Credits’ account of the sequel recounts that origin.

Papyrus creator Chris Costello
In a 2017 CBS News interview, as reported by TheWrap, typeface creator Chris Costello said: “It was not my intent to be used for everything — it’s way overused.” He described beginning the font as alphabet sketches while studying the Bible and thinking about biblical times, Egypt, and the Middle East. Avatar producer Jon Landau
In remarks reported from a 2022 interview, producer Jon Landau said the franchise created a typeface called Toruk for later uses as it expanded: “When we realized that the movie was going to expand into a franchise and we’d have other IPs, we went out and created our own font that we’re now using, and we call it Toruk, and it’s available for people to use.” Landau also said the Papyrus sketch prompted a conversation. His comments support that Toruk was developed for franchise uses; they do not establish that the sketch caused the decision. ComicBook.com’s report covers the interview.

The sketch was released online after the April 13, 2024 broadcast, but the sources cited here do not establish its current availability on a streaming service. Peacock is mentioned as a way to watch SNL generally; that does not confirm that Papyrus 2 is in its current catalog.
