Five fictional short films, made between 1915 and 2015, use boxing, track and field, football and cricket to tell compact stories about ambition, adversity and family. Two of them stand out for different reasons: Vanvaas uses cricket commentary to bring a father and son back together, and Baghdad Messi follows a disabled Iraqi boy whose devotion to Lionel Messi survives a country shaped by violence. The other three range from silent-era slapstick to a parody of a Hollywood sports blockbuster.
What this selection covers
The list comes from a Scroll.in feature by Zinnia Ray Chaudhuri, published on August 20, 2016. The article presents the films as a way to see how a sports story can carry “the themes of defeat, victory and glory” within a few minutes. That phrase is the writer’s own framing, not a quotation from a filmmaker or athlete.
Every title here is a fiction film. None is a documentary about a real match, club or athlete, so readers looking for sports history or match footage will need a different list. The table below sets out the comparable details the article gives for each film.
| Film | Year | Sport | Tone | Central thread | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Champion | 1915 | Boxing | Comedy | An accidental boxer, petty politics in the sport, and a romance with his trainer’s daughter | Not stated in the article |
| Rocky VI | 1986 | Boxing | Satire | A parody of Rocky IV that reverses the underdog story, with the Russian fighter Igor as top dog | Not stated in the article |
| The Track Meet | 2010 | Track and field | Comic | A runner’s pursuit of a perfect pair of shoes for a woman he meets while training | Not stated in the article |
| Baghdad Messi | 2012 | Football | Dramatic, set in 2009 | A ten-year-old Iraqi boy with one leg, a Messi fan, hoping Messi will beat Cristiano Ronaldo | 19 minutes (Scroll.in, 2016) |
| Vanvaas | 2015 | Cricket | Intimate, family drama | A father and son at odds, reconnecting through cricket commentary | Eight minutes (Scroll.in, 2016) |
The five films
The Champion (1915)
Charlie Chaplin plays an accidental boxer who gets pulled into the petty politics of the boxing world while training for a bout. A romance with his trainer’s daughter runs alongside the match preparation. Of the five, it is the oldest and the one that depends most on physical comedy rather than on the sport’s stakes.

Rocky VI (1986)
Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki made this parody of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky IV. The article says it works by turning the usual underdog narrative around, so that the Russian fighter Igor is the top dog. It is the most explicitly self-aware film on the list: to enjoy it, you need some familiarity with the Rocky series it mocks.
The Track Meet (2010)
Miles Teller stars as a track-and-field athlete whose training is interrupted by a mysterious woman he encounters. His goal turns into a quest for a perfect pair of shoes. The article describes it as comic-tinged, and it is the lightest of the modern films on the list.

Baghdad Messi (2012)
Set in 2009, the film follows Hamoudi, a ten-year-old Iraqi boy with one leg missing. He is a devoted Messi fan who hopes Messi will beat Cristiano Ronaldo. At 19 minutes, the article says it shows violence failing to crush Iraqi children’s passion for football. It is the strongest adversity story in the set, and the sport here is less a contest than a source of hope.
Vanvaas (2015)
Directed by Sandeep Modi and starring Piyush Mishra, this eight-minute film centres on a father and son who are at odds. Their relationship begins to mend as they listen to cricket commentary together. The article describes cricket as a neutraliser that bridges the gap between them. It is the clearest example in the list of sport as a family connection rather than a competition.

Choosing among them
- For a relationship story: start with Vanvaas, the shortest film, where the sport works as a shared activity between estranged family members.
- For adversity: Baghdad Messi is the most serious film, with its focus on a child living in a violent setting.
- For comedy: The Champion and The Track Meet are the lighter options, with The Champion the older and more slapstick of the two.
- For a sports-film parody: Rocky VI works best if you already know Rocky IV.
Runtimes and what the article does not give
The article gives runtimes only for Baghdad Messi (19 minutes) and Vanvaas (eight minutes). Those figures come from Scroll.in’s 2016 listing. No runtime is stated for the other three films, so this article does not supply one either. The article also includes no broader statistics or comparative data; its descriptions of the films are editorial summaries rather than verified plot details from the films themselves.
Finding the films today
The 2016 article includes “Play” links for the films. Those links were a feature of the original page and may no longer work. Whether any of the films can be watched in your country now depends on current rights and platform listings, which change over time and were not checked for this piece. Search each title together with its year to find the current source, and be aware that some of these films may be hard to find legally outside festival or archive screenings.
