In Rolling Stone’s 2014 mini documentary, Garth Hudson returns to Big Pink, the Saugerties, New York house tied to The Band and Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes sessions. Stepping into the basement, Hudson says, “It’s way bigger than I thought.” The visit was his first since moving out in 1968, according to Rolling Stone’s account.

Watch Hudson revisit Big Pink

The short film follows Hudson around the house and grounds, with the former Band organist reflecting on the place where the Basement Tapes sessions took shape. The camera returns with him to the basement, where he shares a memory of Bob Dylan arriving while the musicians were cleaning up.

“We’d be around, cleaning up or whatever, and Bob would come in. Bob didn’t like to sing the same song over and over,” Hudson recalls. His remark offers a small, personal glimpse of the informal atmosphere around those sessions rather than a comprehensive account of how the recordings were made.

Why Big Pink matters to the Basement Tapes

Big Pink is the Saugerties home associated with the Basement Tapes recordings made by Dylan and The Band. Hudson played organ in The Band and operated the tape recorder during the sessions, putting him in a distinctive position to remember both the music and the circumstances in which it was captured.

The visit came in 2014, decades after Hudson had moved out. Rolling Stone’s article connected the film to the commercial release that year of the complete Basement Tapes recordings, which it described as a 130-track set. That release is separate from the mini documentary: the film documents Hudson’s return, while the recordings present the music from the sessions.

From the house to Music from Big Pink

The house also gives its name to The Band’s 1968 album Music from Big Pink. The album and the Basement Tapes are related through the musicians and the place, but they are distinct releases: one is The Band’s album, the other a collection of Dylan and Band recordings associated with the sessions at Big Pink.
