We Live in Time is a 2024 romantic drama starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield as two people whose chance meeting grows into a life together, tested by a serious diagnosis. Directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Payne, it tells that story across three interwoven periods rather than in a straight chronological line.
What is We Live in Time about?
Almut, a chef, and Tobias, a recently divorced cereal marketeer, meet by chance. Their relationship develops through falling in love, making a home and becoming parents. When Almut receives an ovarian-cancer diagnosis, the couple must confront what it means for their shared future. A24 describes the film as an unconventional, decade-spanning love story: A24’s official film page.
The illness is part of the film’s fictional story, not a medical account. Its focus is the couple and their family life.
How does the film’s timeline work?
The film moves among three periods in Almut and Tobias’s relationship. Instead of supplying every event in chronological order, it places different stages of their life alongside one another, so the audience sees the relationship through several facets.

In a BFI interview published on 19 December 2024, Crowley said the structure was present in Payne’s screenplay from the start. He described the aim as capturing what it feels like to be inside a relationship rather than simply following one line of events. The time shifts are expressive, not a claim that life unfolds this way. Read the BFI interview with John Crowley.
