Watch the official trailer for Saturday Night, Jason Reitman’s film about the frantic 90 minutes before the first Saturday Night Live broadcast. Sony published the trailer on August 8, 2024; its description says Reitman and Gil Kenan wrote the film, which revisits the backstage events leading up to the show’s 1975 debut.
What the trailer reveals about Saturday Night
Sony’s trailer, titled “SATURDAY NIGHT – Official Trailer (HD),” introduces a fast-moving ensemble comedy-drama set as the new program races toward airtime. The film follows the pressure and last-minute disorder behind the scenes rather than presenting a documentary account of the broadcast’s production.
Sony dates the story to 11:30 p.m. on October 11, 1975, and describes it as unfolding in real time. The premise is the 90 minutes leading up to the first Saturday Night Live broadcast from NBC’s Studio 8H.
Cast: who plays Lorne Michaels and the original performers?
Gabriel LaBelle plays Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator and showrunner. The ensemble also includes actors portraying original cast members and other people involved in the launch.

How closely does the film follow real events?
Saturday Night is based on the people and circumstances around the premiere, but its scenes are dramatized. In a TIME report published October 11, 2024, Olivia B. Waxman said Reitman and the filmmakers interviewed people who had been there, including Michaels, performers, writers, art-department staff and former NBC pages. The goal was to recreate the atmosphere of a last-minute scramble, not to reproduce every event exactly.

One clear example is the fire shown on the set: TIME reports that it did not happen as depicted. The scene dramatizes multiple mishaps. Belushi did sign his contract on the day of the premiere, according to TIME, while the film’s ice-skating detail is unlikely to be historical.
Reitman described the intended effect as making viewers feel “like there’s no possible way the show is going to make it to air because everything’s happening so last second.” That is the film’s dramatic approach, rather than a claim that each crisis happened as shown.
