The car’s standout engineering story is its combination of a hybrid V8 powertrain, ground-effect aerodynamics and a carbon-fiber chassis. The episode appears under the platform title McLaren W1 – The Ultimate Hypercar! Jay Leno’s First Look, rather than the supplied headline. Watch the feature on Jay Leno’s Garage.
What is the McLaren W1?
The W1 is McLaren’s high-performance hybrid hypercar and the latest entry in the company’s “1” lineage. Its design brings together a combustion engine, an electric module and track-focused aerodynamics in a road-legal car. McLaren’s specifications and performance claims are manufacturer figures, not independent test results.
How does the W1’s hybrid powertrain work?
McLaren’s system combines its MHP-8 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a lighter E-module and F1-derived battery technology. Power is delivered through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an integrated E-differential. The electric component is part of the hybrid powertrain; the specifications cited here do not establish an electric-only range or capability.
McLaren lists combined output at 1,275 PS (1,258 bhp) and maximum torque at 1,340 Nm (988 lb-ft). It claims 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 2.7 seconds, 0–200 km/h (0–124 mph) in 5.8 seconds, and a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). The company calls it the fastest-accelerating road-legal McLaren it has made; that claim is limited to McLaren’s own road-legal cars, not all cars. See McLaren’s W1 specifications.

What are the W1’s aerodynamic and chassis secrets?
The W1 is built around McLaren’s carbon-fiber Aerocell monocoque and Race Active Chassis Control III. Its aerodynamic package uses ground effect, an active front splitter and an Active Long Tail. McLaren says the tail extends by 300 mm in race mode and that the complete aero package can generate up to 1,000 kg of downforce—five times its road configuration. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independently verified measurements in the cited material.
The trade-off is a car whose shape and systems are engineered to manage airflow and grip as well as to meet road-car requirements. McLaren’s page gives a dry-lightest weight of 1,399 kg (3,084 lb); that figure is not a curb weight and should not be compared directly with curb-weight figures for other cars.
