TV-MA is the U.S. television rating for mature audiences. The Federal Communications Commission defines it as “mature audience only,” meaning the program may be unsuitable for children under 17. Programs carrying this rating may also show content descriptors that explain the reasons behind it.
What the TV-MA label means
TV-MA belongs to the TV Parental Guidelines, the voluntary industry rating system used for most television programming in the United States. The FCC’s published wording is:
“TV-MA (mature audience only – may be unsuitable for children under 17).”
That definition appears in a 2019 FCC document (DA 19-120), and it is the wording to quote if you need attribution. The rating is guidance about age appropriateness. It does not legally bar anyone under 17 from watching, and it does not tell you what happens in any particular scene.

How TV-MA compares with TV-14 and film ratings
The most useful comparison is with TV-14, the adjacent television category. The two labels differ mainly in the age guidance they give.

TV-MA is not the television equivalent of a film rating. The U.S. film ratings R and NC-17 are a separate system, and the FCC material does not establish a one-to-one match between them and TV-MA. If you are comparing a TV series with a movie, compare the age guidance each system states, not the labels themselves.

Reading the letters after the rating
When a TV-MA program carries additional letters, they are content descriptors. They describe categories of content, not a full inventory of scenes. The TV Parental Guidelines use these descriptors:
D: suggestive dialogue
Marks dialogue with sexual innuendo or suggestive talk.

L: coarse or crude language
Marks strong or offensive language.
S: sexual situations
Marks sexual content or situations.
V: violence
Marks violent content.
FV: fantasy violence
The FCC lists FV for fantasy violence in older children’s programming. You are more likely to see it on children’s series than on TV-MA titles.
Descriptors tell you which categories are present, and often help you decide quickly. They will not tell you how intense a particular moment is, how often it recurs, or how it is framed.

Rating a whole series or a single episode
Episodic programs can be rated individually, so two episodes of the same series may carry different ratings. Before relying on the label for a specific episode, check that episode’s listing or the content advisory the service provides. Do not infer an episode’s content from the series rating alone.

The FCC states that the guidelines cover most television programming, including broadcast and cable. Several categories are excepted, including:

- News programming
- Sports programming
- Advertisements
Documentary series aired on broadcast or cable are generally within the guidelines, while news and sports programming are not. Do not describe TV-MA as a label used across every medium, such as streaming, films, or video games, because the FCC source addresses television programming only.
Using TV-MA with parental controls
The official TV Parental Guidelines site explains that ratings can be used with V-Chip and set-top-box parental controls, which can block programs based on their ratings. Support varies by device and service, so check your specific equipment’s settings rather than assuming a setup works everywhere.
- Confirm that your television or set-top box supports rating-based blocking.
- Check which rating thresholds you can set, and whether TV-MA can be blocked on its own.
- Test the setting with a program that carries the rating before relying on it.
What the rating cannot tell you
The American Academy of Pediatrics presents rating systems as one tool families can use when choosing media, not as a verdict on what is appropriate for every child. A child’s maturity, the household’s values, and the context of viewing all matter. Use TV-MA together with the descriptors, the episode information, and your own judgment.
These labels describe the U.S. system. They do not apply to television-rating systems in other countries.
