Probably briefly—but the public record does not establish that Brittany Murphy and Eminem were a committed couple or how long any romance lasted. The clearest affirmative evidence is Murphy’s reported answer in a Letterman interview: when asked whether there was romance off screen, she said, “It came and it went.” Contemporary coverage described Eminem as a close friend, so the careful answer is that Murphy appeared to acknowledge a brief romantic episode, not a clearly defined girlfriend relationship.
What did Brittany Murphy say about romance with Eminem?
In an exchange transcribed in a later report about the pair, David Letterman asked Murphy, “Was there romance off the screen?” She answered “yeah,” then added, “It came and it went.” That is the strongest public indication that something romantic happened between them.
The wording suggests a short-lived episode, but it does not say when it began or ended, how long it lasted, whether they were exclusive, or whether either considered the other a boyfriend or girlfriend. The exchange is reported retrospectively by Distractify; it should not be stretched into proof of a formal, sustained relationship.
What did contemporary reporting say?
A January 2003 Associated Press report described Eminem as Murphy’s close friend while addressing rumors that they had dated during filming. Murphy spoke about respecting his privacy: she recalled opening a book about him on their first day of hair and makeup, then closing it and deciding that if there was anything he wanted her to know, he would tell her as she got to know him.

That account establishes that they were close and that dating rumors were already circulating. It does not confirm a romance. The AP report appeared through Deseret News.
Why did people connect them?
Murphy and Eminem played a romantic pair in 8 Mile (2002): she played Alex, the love interest of his character. Their on-screen relationship and chemistry naturally prompted questions about whether they were involved off screen. But a fictional romance, even between actors with visible chemistry, is not evidence of a real-life relationship.
Do co-star memories or Eminem’s later comments settle it?
Taryn Manning, another actor in 8 Mile, later recalled off-screen chemistry, but also described the rumored romance as “speculated.” That recollection may explain why people wondered about the pair; it is not independent confirmation that they dated.
In 2010, Eminem spoke warmly about Murphy in an interview excerpt republished by Universal Music Germany. In the German-language excerpt, he said there had been a time when they were very close and called her a good person. That conveys affection and closeness, but it does not establish dating status. So, was Brittany Murphy really Eminem’s girlfriend?
The most defensible conclusion is that Murphy appeared to acknowledge a brief off-screen romance. The available public evidence does not establish whether they used the label “girlfriend” or “boyfriend,” or whether the connection amounted to a committed relationship. The distinction matters: her brief affirmative answer points to romance, while contemporary reporting and Eminem’s later remarks do not fill in its duration or status.
