Queen’s Live Aid set is a convincing contender for one of rock’s most memorable televised performances, but “greatest of all time” is a matter of judgment—not a settled ranking. Its reputation rests on a compact run of hits, a visibly engaged Wembley crowd and a broadcast that made that participation part of the show.
What Queen played at Live Aid
Queen performed at Wembley Stadium in London on 13 July 1985 as part of Live Aid, the benefit concert staged simultaneously at Wembley and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The band’s official archive describes its allotted time as 19 minutes; a setlist record gives the sequence and a fan site rounds the slot to 20. “About 20 minutes” is the fairest shorthand unless referring specifically to the archive’s 19-minute description.
- Bohemian Rhapsody (partial)
- Radio Ga Ga
- Ay-Oh
- Hammer to Fall
- Crazy Little Thing Called Love
- We Will Rock You (partial)
- We Are the Champions
Mercury and guitarist Brian May later performed “Is This the World We Created?” together during the event. That duet was separate from Queen’s Wembley set. The sequence is recorded by setlist.fm, a community-maintained setlist database.
Why the set became so famous
A tight set built around familiar songs
Queen had little time, so the performance leaned on abbreviated, recognizable hits rather than lengthy arrangements. Ian Inglis’s scholarly chapter on the set explains its effect partly through this musical construction and the band’s preparedness: Queen was touring and had rehearsed for Live Aid. Inglis also notes that some other performances encountered technical problems; this is contextual analysis, not a scorecard that proves Queen was objectively superior.

The choice suited the benefit’s practical aims. Inglis quotes Live Aid worldwide event coordinator Pete Smith recalling that organizers asked artists to play the songs they were best known for, in the hope of raising the most money. Smith also praised Queen’s medley of its number-one hits in retrospect. Both remarks are quoted through Inglis’s chapter, rather than presented here as independently checked recordings of the original interview.
The crowd became part of what viewers saw
Inglis describes Wembley spectators singing along from the start of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and moving together during “Radio Ga Ga.” Freddie Mercury’s exchanges with the audience mattered, but so did the television presentation: camera shots made the crowd’s response visible to people watching at home. The broadcast did not simply document a performance; it helped shape the impression of a stadium acting in unison.

The event gave the performance a larger frame
Live Aid was a 16-hour benefit across Wembley and Philadelphia, organized to raise money for famine relief in Africa. Wembley Stadium’s event history says the broadcast reached more than one billion people in 110 countries and the concerts raised over £100 million. These are figures for Live Aid as a whole, not for Queen’s set or its audience alone. See Wembley Stadium’s Live Aid history for its event-level account.
What “greatest of all time” can—and cannot—mean
There is no single agreed measure that can establish the greatest live performance across every artist, venue and era. Queen’s official archive says the Live Aid appearance is often labelled the “Greatest Live Performance Ever,” which establishes the strength of its reputation, not an objective result. TIME’s 2015 retrospective similarly says many consider it the band’s finest performance. Neither statement settles a universal comparison.

- Perfect size: 19 x 13 inches
- Easy to Frame
- Versatile Design
- Makes a Great Gift
A more useful judgment asks what the set achieved on several dimensions:
- Musical execution: a short, coherent sequence of familiar songs, delivered by a band that had prepared for the appearance.
- Audience response: singing and synchronized movement that made participation a visible feature rather than background atmosphere.
- Broadcast impact: camera work that carried the scale of the crowd into homes around the world.
- Fit with the occasion: a hits-focused set suited to a benefit built around a vast live and television audience.
- Later reception: the performance’s continued reputation, viewed in part through the later memory of Mercury.
These criteria, discussed by Inglis, make a strong case for calling it one of rock’s landmark televised sets. They do not amount to a comprehensive ranking against every Live Aid act or every concert in history. TIME’s retrospective also records criticism of Live Aid’s musical priorities and humanitarian framing, a reminder that the event’s scale is not, by itself, proof of artistic greatness.

Did Live Aid revive Queen’s career?
Queen’s official archive retrospectively says the appearance revitalized the band and helped set it up for the 1986 Magic Tour. That is the band archive’s account of the performance’s significance; it should not be taken to mean that this one set alone caused a measurable commercial turnaround. Queen’s archive also records the Wembley appearance and its allotted 19 minutes at QueenOnline’s Live Aid page.
The fairest verdict
Queen’s Live Aid performance is “greatest” only if the word is understood as an argued opinion, not a verifiable all-time title. Its brief, hit-driven structure, Mercury’s command of the crowd and the television broadcast’s portrayal of collective participation explain why it remains a compelling candidate. The evidence supports calling it one of the most celebrated performances of its kind—not declaring every alternative defeated.
