After an ammonia leak forced Jake Anderson and the crew of the Titan Explorer to abandon ship, Captain Keith Colburn and the Wizard found them in a lifeboat and brought them aboard, according to an exclusive report and clip from Entertainment Weekly (EW). The rescue follows the season 21 premiere’s cliffhanger.
What happened aboard the Titan Explorer?
In Ashley Boucher’s EW report, published August 7, 2025, an ammonia leak breaks out aboard Anderson’s vessel. EW says Anderson shuts off the engines and pumps to mitigate fire risk, after which the ship lists dangerously. With the threat of chemical fire or capsizing, he orders the crew to abandon ship. These details are EW’s account of the televised sequence, not an independently documented maritime incident.

Who rescued Jake Anderson and the crew?
In the clip from the following episode, Colburn and the Wizard locate Anderson and the crew in their lifeboat. EW says the Wizard was fishing for red king crab in far west waters near Adak Island and was close enough to help.
The Wizard crew takes several moments to reel in the lifeboat and make sure people are inside and safe. Colburn appears worried; when the lifeboat comes alongside, he cheers and wipes his eyes as the crew is brought aboard.

Why was the rescue call so frightening?
EW reports that the distress call sent shockwaves through the Dutch Harbor fleet. Sig Hansen told EW that hearing an abandon-ship call was “just heart-wrenching,” especially when vessels are alone and may not know everything happening to the crew in danger. He also emphasized how little time may be available in remote waters: “Time is always of the essence, so that’s the scary part.”
Where does the rescue fit in season 21?
EW says the season 21 premiere ended with the Titan Explorer crew abandoning ship; the rescue clip appears in the following episode. EW’s article does not give that episode’s full title or exact broadcast date. At the time of publication, EW listed the series as airing Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel; that is a historical schedule, not a current listing.

The clip and EW’s report show the Wizard recovering Anderson and the crew from their lifeboat. EW did not provide an independent Coast Guard or incident-record account, and its article did not establish what happened to the Titan Explorer afterward. The account here is therefore limited to EW’s coverage of the television scene.
