Prosecutors then dismissed the charges. He was never convicted of Beach’s death.
What happened in the 2019 boat crash?
In the early hours of February 24, 2019, a boat carrying Paul Murdaugh and friends struck bridge pilings in the Archer’s Creek area of Beaufort County, South Carolina. Mallory Beach, 19, was thrown from the boat and died; her body was recovered about a week later. Netflix Tudum’s timeline summarizes the crash and recovery dates.
A 2023 court-filed settlement petition alleges that Paul was intoxicated and driving when the boat hit the pilings. That is an allegation in a civil filing, not a criminal court finding. The petition describes the claims made in the wrongful-death case.
What were the criminal charges against Paul Murdaugh?
A Beaufort County grand jury indicted Paul on April 18, 2019, on three felony counts: one count of boating under the influence causing death and two counts of boating under the influence causing great bodily injury. He pleaded not guilty in May 2019. The Island Packet reported the indictment, plea, and later dismissal.

An indictment is a formal accusation; it is not a verdict. Paul never faced a trial on the boat-crash charges, so no jury or judge found him guilty or imposed a sentence in that criminal case.
Why were the charges dismissed?
Paul and his mother were found shot to death on June 7, 2021. After obtaining Paul’s death certificate, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office dropped the charges because he was dead. With the defendant deceased, the criminal case ended without a trial or a determination of guilt. The Island Packet’s account attributes the explanation to an Attorney General’s Office spokesperson.

How was the civil lawsuit different?
Beach’s family pursued a wrongful-death case against multiple defendants. That was a civil proceeding seeking resolution of the family’s claims, not a criminal prosecution of Paul. The family’s claims were resolved through settlements; Associated Press reporting says Parker’s Corporation paid the Beach family $15 million as part of the settlement. The Associated Press covered the settlement context.
The court-filed petition describes a proposed $15 million compromise of claims against Parker’s Corporation and records allegations made by the estate. A settlement resolves civil claims; by itself, it does not establish that Paul was criminally guilty or that he was convicted. The State reported on the close of the civil case and settlement details.
Was this the same as Alex Murdaugh’s criminal cases?
No. Paul Murdaugh was the defendant in the boating-under-the-influence case connected to Beach’s death. Alex Murdaugh’s criminal proceedings were separate. Keeping the names and cases distinct avoids confusing Paul’s dismissed charges with Alex’s cases.
