There is no reliable public evidence that Mike Tyson’s 1989 divorce from Robin Givens decimated his net worth. The couple’s property agreement was secret, and the available contemporary reports do not disclose what either person received. Tyson’s bankruptcy came much later, amid reports of spending, legal problems and bad investments; the sources do not establish the divorce as its cause.
What is known about the divorce settlement?
Tyson and Givens’s divorce became final in New Jersey in June 1989. The Los Angeles Times reported that they had reached “a secret agreement on the division of their property.” The terms and any settlement amount were not disclosed.
The legal setting matters: the couple had earlier obtained a divorce in the Dominican Republic, but the Los Angeles Times reported it was not binding in New Jersey, where they had primarily resided. The June proceeding finalized the divorce there.
What did Robin Givens say about taking money?
In October 1988, Givens said she would complete the divorce without taking money from Tyson. Her lawyer’s statement, reported by The Washington Post, included her words: “I never married Michael for money.”

That statement describes her public position at the time; it does not reveal the terms of the agreement finalized the following June. It therefore cannot establish whether money or property changed hands, or how much.
Does Tyson’s later bankruptcy prove the divorce ruined him?
No. Tyson filed for bankruptcy in 2003, but that fact alone does not show what caused his financial decline. Biography.com’s 2024 account describes spending, multiple trials and bad investments among the pressures that caught up with him. A Washington Post retrospective also discussed excessive spending.

Those reports concern a much later period and describe multiple factors. They do not quantify the effect of the Givens divorce or trace Tyson’s eventual bankruptcy to its settlement.
Why fight earnings are not the same as net worth
UPI reported that Tyson earned more than $20 million for his 91-second knockout of Michael Spinks in 1988. That was a reported purse for one fight, not a statement of his total assets, debts or net worth. UPI’s account also does not establish what Tyson had available after taxes, expenses or other obligations.

Likewise, a later report that Tyson spent $2 million on a bathtub for Givens is a retrospective spending detail, not evidence of a divorce payment. The Washington Post reported that figure in 2004; it cannot substitute for a disclosed settlement or an audited balance sheet.
