No. Leatherface was fictional; no real person is established as the character’s literal identity. The 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre drew on real-world inspirations, including Ed Gein’s crimes, but its Texas story was fictional—not a record of an actual massacre.
Was Leatherface based on Ed Gein?
Ed Gein was an influence on the filmmakers, not Leatherface’s real identity. The Texas State Historical Association says director Tobe Hooper and co-writer Kim Henkel drew on Gein’s crimes, while a University of Texas archival description characterizes the script as loosely inspired by Gein. That describes an inspiration, not a biographical adaptation: the film does not establish Leatherface as Gein, and its Texas events are not a factual account of Gein’s life.
The sources do not support claims that Gein used a chainsaw or committed the murders depicted in the film. Those details belong to the fictional story.
What inspired Leatherface’s mask?
Hooper also recounted a separate anecdote about a family doctor who told him about a Halloween mask made from a cadaver. The Texas State Historical Association reports this as an inspiration associated with Leatherface; its Hooper biography likewise describes a doctor who claimed to have made such a mask. This is an attributed story Hooper recalled, not independent verification that the doctor actually made one.

Why did the film say it was based on a true story?
The film’s opening written statement and voice-over presented its events as true, and it was marketed as based on a true story. But the AFI Catalog and the Texas State Historical Association describe the plot as fictional. The true-story claim was part of the film’s framing and marketing, not evidence that its characters or Texas massacre were real.

The historical sources describe the plot as fictional, and Gunnar Hansen, who played Leatherface, later wrote that there was no Texas massacre on which the movie was based. Hansen’s statement is a retrospective account; considered alongside the film catalog and historical reference descriptions, it reinforces the distinction between the fictional events and the real-world influences behind the movie.
