A title-centered account begins in September 2002, when WWE created the World Heavyweight Championship for Raw and named Triple H its inaugural champion; WWE’s chronology identifies Batista’s 2005 World Title win as the endpoint of Triple H’s reign. A broader framing starts with Triple H’s 2002 comeback.
What does “Reign of Terror” mean?
The phrase describes how fans and commentators have characterized Triple H’s prominence on Raw, particularly his position as the brand’s leading champion in the early-to-mid 2000s. WWE’s official pages document the relevant events, but do not establish “Reign of Terror” as an official storyline name or define a single canonical period.
That makes the starting point a matter of framing, rather than a disputed championship record. The broad version begins with Triple H’s return in January 2002; the more focused, title-centered version begins when Raw received its own world championship in September 2002. WWE’s chronology provides a documented title endpoint in 2005, when Batista won his first World Title and ended Triple H’s reign.
How Triple H returned to the top
The January 2002 comeback
Triple H returned to Raw on January 7, 2002, after a serious quadriceps injury. WWE says the return came 231 days after he had been sidelined; a separate WWE feature describes his rehabilitation as lasting eight months. The gap between those figures reflects the different ways the pages describe the recovery, not a reason to treat them as interchangeable measurements.

Royal Rumble to WrestleMania X8
After returning, Triple H won the 2002 Royal Rumble and defeated Chris Jericho at WrestleMania X8 in Toronto to become Undisputed WWE Champion. In WWE’s account, Triple H called the WrestleMania victory “the defining moment of my comeback from a career-ending quad tear.” The comeback is important context for the later Raw title story, but it is not itself the start of the Raw World Heavyweight Championship reign.
Why Raw got a new world championship
The brand split created the conditions for Triple H’s title-centered dominance on Raw. WWE’s retrospective says Brock Lesnar, then Undisputed Champion, chose to defend the championship exclusively on SmackDown, leaving Raw without its own world title. Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff responded by creating the World Heavyweight Championship in September 2002 and naming Triple H its inaugural champion.

- DESIGN: Highly detailed Scorpios Rex action figure from the Ultimate Damage Series featuring movie-accurate sculpting and paint applications
- ARTICULATION: Multiple points of articulation allow for dynamic poses and action-packed play scenarios

- DISPLAY WORTHY: Impressive scale and detail make this figure an excellent collectible for both play and display
This is the clearest starting point for a narrowly defined “Reign of Terror” focused on Raw’s world-title picture: it ties the label to a specific championship and brand, rather than to the more general fact that Triple H had returned to WWE and won the Undisputed title earlier in the year.
Keep the two 2002 title reigns separate
Triple H’s Undisputed Championship reign and his later Raw World Heavyweight Championship story are related parts of the same year, but they are distinct records. WWE dates his Undisputed Championship reign from March 17 to April 21, 2002, a span of 34 days. The Raw World Heavyweight Championship was created later, in September.

| Chapter | What WWE documents | How it fits the label |
|---|---|---|
| Undisputed Championship | March 17–April 21, 2002; 34 days, according to WWE’s title history. | A comeback milestone, but not the Raw World Heavyweight Championship reign. |
| Raw World Heavyweight Championship | Created in September 2002 after the Undisputed title became exclusive to SmackDown; Triple H was named inaugural champion, according to WWE’s retrospective. | The clearest title-centered starting point for the Raw framing. |
| Batista’s first World Title | WWE’s chronology says Batista’s 2005 win ended Triple H’s reign. | A documented championship endpoint, not a universal ruling on when every fan’s broader label ends. |
When did the “Reign of Terror” end?
For a championship-centered account, 2005 is the best-supported endpoint: WWE’s chronology says Batista won his first World Title, ending Triple H’s reign. That establishes the end of the documented title run in WWE’s framing. It does not prove that all fans use the same boundary for the broader “Reign of Terror” label, which can refer to Triple H’s larger period of prominence rather than only one championship reign.

The label itself signals a negative judgment about Triple H’s dominance, but the official WWE material cited here is strongest on dates, title history, and WWE’s own framing. It does not, by itself, settle whether the booking worked, how viewers responded at the time, or which rivals were helped or hindered most. Those are interpretive questions that require evidence beyond a chronology of championship changes.

A careful account can therefore distinguish the documented sequence from the evaluation: Triple H returned from injury, rose to the Undisputed Championship, became the inaugural Raw World Heavyweight Champion after the brand split, and lost the title-era position to Batista in 2005. Whether that sequence deserves the “Reign of Terror” label—and how broadly to apply it—remains a matter of interpretation.
