Wake Up Dead Man is worth watching if you want a Benoit Blanc mystery with more gothic atmosphere and emotional weight than the earlier films. Its church setting and serious questions about faith make it darker than Glass Onion, but it keeps the series’ humor. The shift gives the third film a more affecting center, even if it is less breezy than a glamorous island caper.
What is Wake Up Dead Man about?
In Rian Johnson’s third Benoit Blanc mystery, Daniel Craig’s detective investigates the locked-room murder of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, played by Josh Brolin, in a small-town church with a dark history. Blanc works alongside Father Jud Duplenticy, an earnest young priest played by Josh O’Connor. Netflix’s film listing describes the case as an impossible crime; the setup is best approached without knowing more.

The ensemble also includes Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, and Kerry Washington. Netflix describes the film as a 2025 mystery; the Associated Press reported that it arrived on Netflix on December 12, 2025. The film’s runtime is 2 hours 24 minutes and its rating is PG-13, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ listing viewed October 8, 2026.
How does it compare with Knives Out and Glass Onion?
The three films change their atmosphere as well as their cases. Knives Out (2019) builds a cozy, old-house mystery around a New England mansion. Glass Onion (2022) turns its Greek-island setting into a glossy, satirical playground. Wake Up Dead Man trades both for an old stone church, graveyards, and a cavernous chapel. Netflix Tudum calls its mood gothic and grounded, while Johnson has said it reaches back toward the genre’s roots before Agatha Christie, including Edgar Allan Poe.

The comparison is about tone, not a claim that the new film abandons the series’ pleasures. TIME characterizes the first film as cozy and the second as an “eat-the-rich” vacation, while describing the new one as gothic but still funny. Le Monde likewise notes a clever puzzle and strong performances alongside metaphysical questions that lend the story a more anxious mood. The darker register gives the mystery moral texture; it also makes this installment less of a light, breezy romp.
Is Benoit Blanc the main character?
Blanc remains the detective whose observations and deductions drive the case, but Father Jud carries much of the emotional story. Johnson told Netflix Tudum: “The secret to each one of these movies is that Benoit Blanc is not the main character of these films. There’s always a protagonist who has some real stakes and skin in the game.” In this installment, Jud’s faith and struggle with anger and hatred give the investigation personal stakes that a clever puzzle alone would not provide.

That choice changes the balance rather than sidelining Blanc. Craig’s detective is still a major pleasure of the series; Jud gives the film a human center shaped by conscience and belief. The story takes faith seriously without turning into a lecture, and the murder’s solution is not needed to understand why the question of what people believe matters here.
Does the darker tone work?
Mostly, yes. The church and its history supply a visual and atmospheric contrast to the mansion and island of the previous films, while the questions of belief and moral responsibility make the stakes feel less purely game-like. The result is more powerful in an emotional sense: it asks what a mystery can reveal about a person’s convictions, not just who committed a crime.

There is a trade-off. Viewers who most enjoy the franchise’s froth, social satire, or fast comic sparkle may find this entry more solemn and less immediately playful. But dark does not mean humorless: Johnson has described the film as funny and fun, and that lighter current keeps the gothic setting from weighing down every scene.
Is Wake Up Dead Man worth watching?
Yes, especially if you liked the first Knives Out for its mystery craft and want a more serious emotional dimension. It is also a strong choice for viewers curious about a detective story that treats faith as a genuine theme rather than a decorative backdrop. If Glass Onion’s bright satire is your main measure of the series, expect a more restrained, uneasy experience.

Its critics consensus praised the faith-focused mystery and O’Connor’s performance. The listed critic excerpts point to different pleasures: Nell Minow praised the twisty plot, ensemble, and search for meaning, while Donald Clarke compared its scale to Sunday-evening mystery television. That contrast suggests the film’s ambition and thematic weight may appeal more than its genre familiarity or breeziness.
