Walker Hayes, “Fancy Like” Beer and Sobriety: What Connects Them—and What Doesn’t

“Fancy Like” was a song about simple date nights before Athletic Brewing named a beer after it. Hayes’s recovery story is personal, not guidance for everyone.

Walker Hayes’s “Fancy Like” began as a song about an uncomplicated date night, not a beer or sobriety. Athletic Brewing later collaborated with Hayes on a non-alcoholic beer named after the hit. Hayes’s recovery story is separate: he has spoken publicly about it, while cautioning that his own experience with beer during recovery should not be treated as advice for everyone.

What “Fancy Like” meant before the beer

Hayes described the song as an ode to modest date nights and to the mistaken idea that performers always live lavishly. In an ABC News interview published October 6, 2021, he said, “I just basically wrote the song to say, ‘Hey, I’m pretty simple guy, ’bout as fancy as it gets for me is Applebee’s on a date night,’” A dance video with his teenage daughter went viral, and the song later featured in an Applebee’s campaign.

Athletic Brewing’s later beer borrowed the song’s name. That naming and marketing connection does not make the beer the subject of the song.

What is Walker Hayes’s Fancy Like beer?

Athletic Brewing announced the collaboration on April 10, 2024, naming Hayes its first “Chief Fancy Officer.” The company said he helped craft Fancy Like, a classic American Pale. Its announcement described the song as having spent over six months at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart; that is the company’s launch-announcement wording about the song’s chart history.

The launch announcement said the beer would go on sale April 25, 2024. It described each 12-ounce can as containing less than 0.5% ABV, 60 calories and 12 grams of carbohydrates. The initial six-packs were to be sold online and at select retailers in 25 states, according to the Athletic Brewing announcement distributed by PR Newswire. Those were launch-era details, not confirmation of present-day stock.

Product details on Athletic Brewing’s listing

Athletic’s Fancy Like American Pale product page describes a six-pack of non-alcoholic beer brewed in collaboration with Hayes. It calls the beer smooth, sweet and light-bodied, with subtle sweetness and low bitterness. Its average analysis per 12-ounce serving is:

Availability is a dated snapshot

Athletic Brewing’s product page showed “Sold Out” when accessed on October 8, 2026. That establishes the status displayed on that date on Athletic’s page; it does not establish permanent discontinuation or availability through other retailers.

What Hayes has said about sobriety

In a 2025 interview with Partnership to End Addiction, Hayes described beginning to drink at 13 and finding recovery at 35. He discussed family history, alcohol’s effects on his life, and the fear and relief he experienced in early sobriety. He also described songwriting as a way to process difficult experiences: “And honestly, it’s been the cheapest therapy I’ve ever had.”

The interview recounts his grief after the death of his infant daughter, Oakley. Hayes said he considered drinking, returned home and attended an AA meeting. The interview includes a content warning for discussion of death and substance use; the episode is part of his personal account, not a general recovery model.

Does the beer mean non-alcoholic beer is right for everyone in recovery?

No. Hayes has described having a beer in his refrigerator as part of his own recovery story, but he explicitly cautioned against treating that choice as universal: “And I don’t recommend this to anyone, I think everybody has a different story.” His testimony does not establish that non-alcoholic beer is safe or helpful for every person in recovery. The product’s launch description of less than 0.5% ABV also means it was not described as containing zero alcohol. Individual recovery needs differ; Hayes’s account should not substitute for advice from a person’s recovery supports or qualified care providers.

How to keep the three stories straight

  • The song: a lighthearted statement about Hayes’s own modest date-night tastes.
  • The beer: a 2024 Athletic Brewing collaboration that took its name from the song.
  • The sobriety story: Hayes’s personal experience, which he has discussed publicly and has not presented as a prescription for others.
