Michael Schoeffling, who played Jake Ryan in Sixteen Candles, continued acting for several years after the 1984 film. Retrospectives place his final screen role in Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken (1991), after which he left Hollywood and was reported to have turned to woodworking and custom furniture in Pennsylvania. Recent coverage does not confirm whether that furniture business is still operating or provide a verified account of his current life.
What happened to Michael Schoeffling after Sixteen Candles?
Schoeffling’s breakout role was Jake Ryan, the popular high-school student in the 1984 film. He continued acting in movies after its release, including Vision Quest and Mermaids. Retrospectives describe Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, released in 1991, as his last screen role and the endpoint of his Hollywood career. Us Weekly’s 2025 retrospective says he made eight movies after his breakout; TIME’s 2014 retrospective also places his departure after the 1991 film.

What did he do after leaving acting?
Retrospective accounts say Schoeffling and his wife, Valerie Robinson, moved to Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, and went into woodworking, making handcrafted furniture through a design business. In 2014, ABC News summarized the end of his Hollywood career and relayed an older Washington Post description of him as a carpenter near Wilkes-Barre in 1991. That carpenter detail is a report from 1991, not confirmation of his current work. ABC News’ 2014 retrospective covers that account.
Is Michael Schoeffling still making furniture?
The available coverage does not establish whether Schoeffling’s woodworking business remains open today. Us Weekly notes that little public information is available about the business; it would be inaccurate to say he currently runs a shop, takes commissions, or sells furniture on the basis of these reports.

Why did Michael Schoeffling leave Hollywood?
Public reporting describes his move away from acting and into private life and woodworking, but does not establish a specific reason he left the film industry. There is no confirmed explanation from Schoeffling in the cited coverage, so claims about his motives would be speculation.

Us Weekly reported in 2025 that Schoeffling had not given interviews since retiring from acting. Robinson described him as “very reclusive and private” in a 2014 statement to People, as reproduced by Us Weekly; this is her characterization from that year, not a recent comment from Schoeffling. In a 2025 recollection, his co-star Anthony Michael Hall called him “a great guy” and said Schoeffling was “like a big brother to me” on the set of Sixteen Candles. Us Weekly’s 2025 article reports both comments.
