The Beach Boys’ story runs from the five young musicians who formed the group in Hawthorne in 1961 to later members and touring contributors. Brian Wilson died on June 11, 2025; Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983; and Carl Wilson died before Brian. Among the bandmates with more recent public activity documented here, Al Jardine formed a new touring group in 2025, while Bruce Johnston stopped regular touring in 2026. The early lineup is described differently by the band’s official history and Mike Love’s official biography, so “every member” needs a little context.

Who counts as a Beach Boy?

The band’s official history names the founding five as brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. Love’s official biography includes David Marks in its account of the early group. That difference reflects a lineup that shifted at the start; it is not a reason to erase Marks or to pretend every source uses “original member” the same way.

The official Beach Boys site lists Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Bruce Johnston and David Marks under “Members.” Disney’s official documentary materials also identify Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar in the group’s history. The accounts below cover those principal and significant later members, while distinguishing established facts from details not documented in the sources cited here.

What happened to the founding members?

Member Place in the band What happened
Brian Wilson Founding member; singer, bassist, songwriter, arranger and producer Died June 11, 2025, according to his official timeline. He stopped touring with the group in 1964 and focused on recording.
Dennis Wilson Founding member and drummer AP reports that he drowned in 1983. He was the Wilson brother most associated with surfing, and AP describes him as the only band member who actually surfed.
Carl Wilson Founding member and guitarist He died before Brian. The official retrospective identifies Brian as the last surviving Wilson brother, but the sources cited here do not establish Carl’s exact death date or cause.
Mike Love Founding member and Brian’s cousin He remained associated with the touring Beach Boys act in the dated 2026 reporting context, which identified him as its leader. Touring arrangements can change.
Al Jardine Founding member; guitarist, vocalist and songwriter He has pursued solo work and formed the Pet Sounds Band in 2025 from Brian Wilson’s longtime touring musicians.

Brian Wilson: the studio architect

Brian was more than a performer: his songwriting, arranging and production made him a central creative force in the group. The Associated Press reports that stress and exhaustion led him to stop touring in 1964, with Bruce Johnston taking the road role while Brian concentrated on making music. Brian’s official timeline also records solo work, later touring and a 2023 Beach Boys reunion event before his death on June 11, 2025. His story continued beyond his departure from the touring lineup.

Dennis Wilson: drummer and surfer

Dennis played drums and was the brother most closely identified with surfing. The Associated Press reports that he drowned in 1983. The sources cited here do not establish a fuller post-band chronology, so claims about other outcomes in his life are not included.

Carl Wilson: guitarist and founding brother

Carl was a founding member and lead guitarist. A 2025 official retrospective calls Brian the last surviving Wilson brother, establishing that Carl died before him. That retrospective and the other sources cited here do not give Carl’s exact death date or cause.

Mike Love: founding member still associated with the touring act

Love is Brian’s cousin and a founding member. His official biography recounts the early group’s formation, while a 2025 official retrospective includes his memory of making music with Brian as boys. In a 2026 report about Johnston’s touring change, Love was identified as the leader of the touring Beach Boys act; that is a dated description, not a guarantee of future arrangements.

Al Jardine: from the original lineup to the Pet Sounds Band

Jardine is a founding member, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter; his official biography notes that he sang lead on “Help Me, Rhonda.” It also records his solo album A Postcard from California, tours with Brian and the 50th-anniversary Beach Boys lineup, and the Pet Sounds Band, which he formed in 2025 from Brian’s longtime touring musicians. His son Matt Jardine also performs with that group. Al wrote the children’s book Sloop John B: A Pirate’s Tale, released in 2005 and inspired by the song rather than intended as a band history.

What happened to later members and touring contributors?

Bruce Johnston: from Brian’s touring replacement to songwriter

Johnston joined in 1965 to cover Brian’s touring duties and remained with the group for decades, according to the Associated Press. A March 2026 report says he stopped regular touring after more than six decades. It recounts that he left the group in 1972 to pursue songwriting and other projects, returned in 1978, and planned to focus on songwriting after ending regular touring. This was a change to his touring role, not evidence that he had retired from music.

David Marks: an early member whose full later story is not established here

Love’s official biography includes Marks in its account of the early lineup, and Disney’s official documentary materials list him as an interviewee. Those sources establish his early connection and appearance in the documentary, but do not provide enough detail for a reliable account of his later career.

Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar: significant later members

Disney’s documentary materials include a new interview with Chaplin and archival audio from Fataar, establishing their place in the group’s broader history. Those credits alone do not establish the details of their tenures or what each did afterward, so a fuller personal chronology cannot be drawn from them.

How did the band’s story continue?

The Beach Boys’ official history dates the group’s formation to 1961, its signing with Capitol Records to July 1962, and the release of Surfin’ Safari to that year. The same undated official page reports more than 100 million records sold worldwide, more than 80 songs charted worldwide, 36 U.S. Top 40 songs and four U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number ones. It also dates the group’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to 1988. The sales and chart totals are the page’s stated figures; it does not assign them a publication year.

Accounts by their bandmates also show the personal side of the group. In a 2025 official retrospective, Johnston praised Brian’s laugh; Jardine described him as engaging and funny, while also calling him a taskmaster. Love recalled their childhood music-making: “We’d go outside and listen to the car radio and sing. Sometimes we’d spend the night in the car.” The retrospective identifies the speakers as bandmates but does not provide formal role labels alongside the quotations.
